Dr. Angela Canfield Holds Second Inspiring Smiles Series Talk in Honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Standard

(SAVANNAH, GA) Dr. Angela Canfield of Sandfly Family Dental in Savannah, GA announces the second talk in the 2015 Inspiring Smiles Series will be held Tuesday, April 14, from noon to 1 p.m. The discussion is titled “Oral DNA and Periodontal Testing.”

Periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis, are caused from bacteria that inflames the gums. Symptoms include bad breath, red or swollen gums, and receding gums. Dr. Canfield will explain the benefits of early detection and the process to determine patients’ risks of these diseases.

According Dentistry Today, every sixty minutes, a person dies from oral cancer. The disease is typically associated with long-term tobacco use, but it is becoming more frequent in young adults who have never smoked. Besides tobacco use, the risk factors that could lead to oral cancer include DNA abnormalities or family history. But the main cause, especially in young adults who don’t smoke, is the human papillomavirus (HPV), which may be spread by sexually active people through intimate contact.

“HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, which was once the leading cause of cancer deaths for women in the United States,” said Dr. Canfield, “Now that women routinely get PAP tests, which provide early detection of conditions that could lead to cervical cancer, those cancer rates are on the decline. In fact, these days, a person is three times more likely to die from oral cancer than cervical cancer.”

The Inspiring Smiles Series will take place at Dr. Canfield’s office located at 7360 Skidaway Rd., Suite H2. It is free to attend, but there is an encouraged donation to the Savannah Children’s Theatre. To RSVP, call Dr. Canfield at 912-349-0472. Dr. Canfield will also be giving away free oral cancer screenings during the month of April; any interested person is asked to call her office for more information.

Matilda Jane Clothing Launches Tween Line featuring Savannah in Photos

Standard

(SAVANNAH, GA) Matilda Jane Clothing is pleased to announce the release of “435,” its very first tween collection. Developed with the input of a community of tween girls, 435 is being launched nationally with photos featuring Savannah as backdrop.

“The early reviews are proclaiming 435 a huge hit,” said Robyn Shirley, an independent Trunk Keeper for the clothing company. “Tweens are loving the cool simplicity of the line and how it reflects their style. It has a decidedly more grown up feel, but not too grown up.”

Shirley is part of a network of independent representatives who get to know their customers personally. Having operated in South Carolina since 2008, she recently expanded her business to the Savannah area and now serves as a Team Leader as well as a Trunk Keeper for Matilda Jane Clothing.

“Designing for older girls is tricky, but Matilda Jane did it, with a focus group providing input from the girls themselves,” Shirley added. “The result was age-appropriate, stylish designs in sizes eight to fourteen, that moms love, too.”

In developing the new tween clothing line, Matilda Jane looked to the Trunk Keepers’ daughters for insight on fashion, fit and functionality. The tween girls formed the Matilda Jane tween council. Several members of the tween council were chosen to also model their creations at the 435 photo shoot, held this past December in Savannah.

“I am thrilled that our beautiful city was selected for the photo shoot and will be so prominently featured in the Matilda Jane national spring marketing campaign, including print, social media and web promotions,” said Shirley. “Savannah has a cool vibe that blends perfectly with history and tradition, much like the new 435 clothing line itself.”

Canfield Mouth Shield Program Excepting Applications for 2015 Donation

Standard

(SAVANNAH, GA) Angela Canfield, DDS of Sandfly Family Dental, is now accepting applications for the 2015 Canfield Mouth Shield Program. Local organizations may apply to win custom fit mouth guards in personalized colors for their entire team.

Last year, Dr. Canfield donated maroon and white mouth guards to the Benedictine Military School football team, a donation totaling over $9,000 worth of protection equipment.

Custom-made intact mouth guards provide stability to the players’ jaws and cushion blows that can cause severe dental injuries, like broken teeth, fractured jaws, gum lacerations and injuries to their lips or tongue by their teeth.

“Damaging jaw and tooth impact can be caused by anything from direct contact to a misplaced step while running,” said Dr. Canfield. “I choose to donate the gear because research shows that wearing custom-fit mouth guards reduces the risk of severe injuries.”

Custom-fit mouth guards normally cost $85 a piece. Dr. Canfield will be donating mouth guards to every player of the selected team free of charge.

The mouth guards have a one year warranty. The warranty covers the dental expenses incurred by players if they are injured while wearing the mouth guards. The warranty also pays $1,093.75 per injured or replaced tooth and up to a maximum total liability of $35,000 per incident.

The American Dental Association (ADA) estimates that the use of mouth guards prevents approximately 200,000 injuries per year in high school and college football teams alone. But mouth guards are important for all types of sports. Wrestling, basketball, soccer, baseball and softball teams are encouraged to apply.

Applications for the 2015 Canfield Mouth Shield Program must be submitted before June 1, 2015 to be considered by the advisory board. For more information or to apply, visit http://www.sandflyfamilydental.com/community/ .

Speros Announces Website Development Division Expansion

Standard

(SAVANNAH, GA) Speros, a national full-service technology company headquartered in Savannah, announces the expansion of its website development division with new capabilities including high-end graphic design, integrated functionality and security components such as those required for medical forms and in e-commerce.

“The big news is we have brought on board a professional graphic designer who understands how to make it all work,” said Keith Fletcher, chief operating officer. “Lauren Dingus knows process and design and how to integrate them to create a website that’s both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.”

Dingus, who recently joined Speros as the firm’s web and graphics designer, has been working in the design field since 2005. She earned a B.A. in graphic design with a minor in art history and visual culture from San Jose State University. Her background includes designing print and web marketing collateral, web design, and social media content management.

“My goal is to ensure our clients’ websites are up-to-date with relevant, meaningful information, which is particularly important in the ever-changing landscape of today’s online world,” Dingus stated. “Speros has the expertise to deliver fully integrated web solutions from content development to integrating social media, web stores, online ads and more. We truly understand the value a professional website adds to the identity of a business.”

Speros is well known for its technology solutions for businesses, and the company’s expanded website development division also provides online security features and safeguards for businesses that have to offer web access to secure, private information, such as medical records or anything dealing with children.

“Federal regulations for HIPAA forms requires massive security,” explained Fletcher. “Medical offices may currently choose to maintain these documents offline, but that won’t be the case for long. The Affordable Care Act will soon be requiring patients to fill out health insurance forms online, and medical practices will have to adapt their websites to comply.”

Speros also maintains a Business Associate Agreement (BAA), which is mandatory under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) whenever a contract is awarded where the contractor provides services, such as a website, involving the use of protected health information. The HIPAA law was enacted to make it easier for people to keep health insurance, protect the confidentiality and security of healthcare information and help the healthcare industry control administrative costs.
