Canfield and Dental Assistant Kim Jackson went to Bethesda to take impressions of each players’ teeth.

Custom-made mouth guards provide stability to the players’ jaws and cushion blows that can cause severe dental injuries such as broken teeth, fractured jaws, gum lacerations and injuries to their lips or tongue.

“Evidence shows that properly fitting mouth guards can reduce impacts that lead to concussions and other severe injuries,” Canfield said. “Anything I can do to protect local athletes from severe injuries is worth my time and expertise, and I’m happy to help.”

The full fitting, molding and examination of each player’s mouth guards usually cost $440. With 44 players on the Bethesda team, Canfield donated approximately $19,360 in mouth-protection gear to Bethesda Academy students.

The mouth guards have a one-year warranty that covers dental expenses incurred by players who are injured while wearing the mouth guards. The warranty also pays $1,093.75 per injured or replaced tooth and up to a maximum total liability of $35,000 per incident.

The American Dental Association estimates the use of mouth guards prevents approximately 200,000 injuries a year in high school and college football.

This marks the 4th year Canfield picked a local sports team to receive free mouth guards as part of the Canfield Mouth-Shield Program. Applications for the 2018 Canfield Mouth-Shield Team should be submitted to her office. Applications must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 1 to be considered.

Subaru of Hilton Head Hosts “Yappy Hour” to Benefit Local Animal Shelter in Conjunction with Clear the Shelters Initiative

(JASPER COUNTY, SC) Subaru of Hilton Head held their July “Yappy Hour” at the dealership at the New River Auto Mall in Hardeeville, S.C.

“Yappy Hour” was free and open to the public and their pets. Guests were encouraged to bring donations for local animal shelters.

Jasper Animal Rescue Mission, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the stray and neglected dogs and cats of Jasper County, S.C., was on site with pets available for adoption.

During the event, guests enjoyed food from Skull Creek Boathouse and live entertainment from Brad Wells. Animal rescue staff was also on site with pets available for adoption.

Wish list items for the shelters include dry dog and cat food, dry puppy and kitten food, Clorox bleach, Fabulousa, Dawn dish soap, kitchen garbage bags (13 and 55 gallon drawstring), dog and cat toys, Rawhides & Nylabones, poop scoopers, powdered laundry detergent, crates and cat carriers, blankets, towels, collars and leashes, office supplies, cat litter and gift cards.

“Yappy Hour” was held in conjunction with the launch of the Clear The Shelters campaign, a nationwide pet adoption drive. Subaru of Hilton Head announced the launch of Clear the Shelters on Thursday, July 13. The community was encouraged to bring pet supplies to fill a fleet of Subarus; participants received a pet gift and ice cream as a thank you for their donation.

Clear the Shelters offers incentives such as free heartworm prevention medication for dogs, two months of free flea treatment for cats and prizes such as pet toys. Nearly 700 shelters are participating nationwide. Last year, Clear the Shelters found homes for 50,000 animals.

Seven shelters are participating in the Clear the Shelters initiative, including the Jasper Animal Rescue Mission, the Palmetto Animal League, Hilton Head Humane Society, Effingham County Shelter, Georgia Animal Rescue & Defence, Humane Society of Greater Savannah, and One Love Animal Rescue. Donations are being collected for each of these shelters at Subaru of Hilton Head.

Verdant Kitchen™ Co-Founder and CEO Ross Harding to Speak on the Healing Properties of Ginger and Turmeric During August 22 Encourage Health Education Lecture

The presentation will take place at the Savannah Morning News Auditorium, 1375 Chatham Parkway, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required, as a healthy lunch will be provided.

Harding, a longtime energy consultant and native of Australia, is the co-founder and CEO of Verdant Kitchen, a gourmet and wellness company that crafts artisan foods and beverages with a focus on the health benefits of the ginger and turmeric family of spices.

The company is the result of a collaboration between Harding and Savannah businessman Howard Morrison. It features products made of ginger and other foods including organic ingredients grown at Morrison’s historic Lebanon Plantation in Savannah.

Their effort was launched after they learned Savannah’s soil was perfect for growing ginger, which is a booming business in Harding’s native Australia. By mid 2013, Verdant Kitchen had developed a product line and, by early 2014, Harding was sampling the products in regional farmers markets.

Now, Verdant Kitchen’s ginger, galangal and turmeric are delivered to customers through a network of distributors, gourmet and wellness retailers, farmers’ markets and internet sales.

The Savannah Urban Garden Alliance (SUGA) has been selected to receive a $1,000 Encourage Health grant that will be presented during the Aug. 22 luncheon. SUGA is one of four local nonprofits selected to receive donations as part of the 2017 lecture series to recognize their efforts in promoting healthy homegrown food by developing gardens at local schools and educating students on basic gardening skills.

This is the fourth year enmarket has partnered with Healthy Savannah, Sandfly Family Dental, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., Hoist Water, Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine and GPB Savannah – WSVH 91.1/WWIO 89.9 to host the Encourage Health Education Series.
