What GDPR Means for Your Business
By Lauren Dingus, Director of Web and Social Media Department

You may have heard some of the buzz going around about the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) that will be enforced in the European Union starting May 25, 2018. This regulation looks to bring a stricter policy to European data security.

GDPR has been designed to protect the Personally Identifiable Information of citizens of the European Union. In short, a website cannot collect a website visitor’s information without their explicit consent, and that they must be notified of any data breaches that may occur.

While you may think that GDPR won’t affect your business in the United States, think again. If your company processes the personal data of subjects in the European Union, regardless of your company’s location, you must comply with these regulations. In other words, you are affected if you have an online presence for your business that can be accessed by anyone in the world.

Impacts for Savannah
The tourism industry remains one of Savannah’s largest economic drivers. According to Visit Savannah, tourists contributed almost $3 billion to our city in 2017. Savannah is a premier travel destination for people all over the world. More and more people are researching Savannah businesses on the web to figure out how to make the best of their vacation. They want to know where they are going to stay, what activities they can do, and which restaurants they should enjoy.

Travel and booking agencies want to pay special attention to the requirements of GDPR. These companies are commonly processing payments and collecting personal data about their customers as they go through the booking process. Here are the requirements your business must follow to be compliant.

Increased territory
GDPR will be enforced for all companies that process the personal data of subjects living in the EU, regardless of the company’s physical location. It will also apply to companies that process personal data who offer goods or services to the EU citizens.

Penalties
Organizations in breach of GDPR can be fined. There is a tiered approach to distinguishing fines with the most being up to 4% of annual global turnover or 20 Million Euros (whichever is greater), for the most serious infringements.

Consent
Request for consent must now be easily accessible and clear to understand. It must also be just as easy to withdraw your consent.

Breach Notification
If a data breach occurs that may risk individual rights, then notification of the breach is mandatory in all member states and must be done within 72 hours of first becoming aware of the breach.

Right to access and to be forgotten
Data subjects have the right to obtain confirmation that personal data concerning them is being processed, where it’s being processed, and for what purpose. The subject also has a right to a copy of the data. Lastly, the subject has the right to request a withdrawal of their information being processed and for their data to be erased.

Design and Privacy
GDPR requires that the inclusion of data protection be included from the beginning of the designing of the system rather than be added on later.

Bank of America Awards $12,500 Grant to Park Place Outreach

Bank of America Awards $12,500 Grant to Park Place Outreach

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has awarded a $12,500 grant to the Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter for operational and program expenses.

Park Place Outreach operates the only shelter in Savannah and Chatham County that serves kids and teenagers ages 11–17, and all services are provided free, including a safe, secure place to stay along with meals and transportation to and from school.

The staff also offers family counseling with follow-up visits after a resident returns home, as well as non-resident services that include an after-school tutorial and drop-in center, recreational services and after-care services. The Shelter, 514 E. Henry St., is open 24 hours a day and offers a safe and loving environment to homeless, abused and runaway kids and teenagers.

“Thanks to Bank of America, troubled teens who have nowhere else to turn can count on Park Place Outreach for shelter, food, clothing and counseling,” said Executive Director Julie Wade. “The money will be used for operational expenses in providing residential and non-residential services to these youth as well as counseling services for parents.”

Bank of America has been a long-term supporter of Park Place Outreach and was recognized in 2018 as the Park Place Outreach Corporate Partner of the Year.

The grant will help bridge a gap created by the loss of federal grants that have funded the organization’s street outreach team. The program includes adult and teen counselors who go onto the streets to talk with homeless kids about the help available to them through Park Place Outreach.

“Addressing community needs through our philanthropic investments is just one way we deploy capital to help build a more sustainable community,” said Patrick O’Neil, Savannah market president, Bank of America. “We’re honored to partner with nonprofit organizations like Park Place Outreach that are helping to advance economic and social progress, in particular for vulnerable populations.”

Porsche 70th Anniversary Celebration Planned at Peacock Automotive

Porsche 70th Anniversary Celebration Planned at Peacock Automotive

(JASPER COUNTY, S.C.) On Saturday, June 9, Peacock Automotive will bring together sports car lovers, local dignitaries and others from across Coastal Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Porsche’s line of premium automobiles.

“The 70th anniversary is an essential reminder and celebration of the brand history and heritage and the community of owners and enthusiasts who share our passion,” said Warner Peacock, president and CEO of Peacock Automotive. “It is also a unique opportunity for Porsche enthusiasts to celebrate together and participate in a global event in typical Porsche fashion.”

Guests are invited to celebrate “Sportscar Together Day” — an event that will feature an international twist — at Porsche of Hilton Head in the Peacock Auto Mall on Highway 278 in Hardeeville, S.C.

Members of the local chapter of the Porsche Club of America, Coastal Empire Region, will display more than a dozen classic Porsche automobiles to convey the decades of the brand’s evolution.

The Porsche brand was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1948 when the company’s founder, Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche created a prototype two-seat open sports car designed as the 356 “No. 1” Roadster. What may be Porsche’s best-known model, the Porsche 911, was launched in 1963. By the beginning of 2018, more than one million 911’s had been manufactured.

Peacock Automotive’s 70-anniversary festivities will include a block party featuring Bavarian-inspired food from Skull Creek Boathouse and non-alcoholic refreshments, along with entertainment by a DJ and a Porsche “birthday cake” to celebrate the brand’s history and passion. The cake will be cut at 1 p.m.

“With an event of this magnitude it is important to highlight the global nature of this program,” Peacock said. “Sportscar Together Day will be our first global celebration, fueled by events around the world along with active online communities and social media. But, it is primarily an opportunity to get together as a community at local Porsche Centers to celebrate the thrills of being sports car owners and enthusiasts.

To that end, devotees of the brand are being asked to share their experiences online using the #SportsCarTogether on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat.

The 70th-anniversary festivities will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 9 at Porsche of Hilton Head at 107 Drivers Way in Hardeeville, S.C. Drawings for door prizes will be held throughout the event. Test drives of all the Peacock Porsche vehicles will be available during the event.

To reserve a complimentary ticket, please visit https://sportscartogether.eventbrite.com
