“Our 2020 seniors deserve the same, momentous send-off as their classmates before them,” said Turner. “We’re all so proud of Jaden, and we just had to think of a way for the Bethesda community to show him how excited we are for his scholarship because he has most certainly earned it.”

Horizons Savannah Teachers Support Independent Learning During COVID-19

(SAVANNAH, GA) In an effort to support independent learning in the midst of school cancellations and a mandatory shelter in place, Horizons Savannah teachers are providing recorded online lessons that correspond with the district’s choice board activities. These lessons are tailored to kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third-fifth grades and middle school and can be viewed anytime from any device.

These resources are available to Horizons families as well as the entire Savannah community.

“We know that all families are balancing many challenges at this time,” said Christy Edwards, executive director of Horizons Savannah. “It’s difficult to know where to start with at-home learning, and while there are many resources available to families online, it can be overwhelming to know how to pull these resources together effectively when you aren’t a teacher. We are doing our best to provide additional tools to make this as easy as possible for parents by creating lessons that support what our students may already be working on.”

Two Bethesda Academy Teachers Earn “Master Teacher” Status Awarded by SCISA

Two Bethesda Academy Teachers Earn “Master Teacher” Status Awarded by SCISA

(SAVANNAH, GA) Two teachers at Bethesda Academy, a private day and boarding school for young men grades six through 12, were granted “master teacher” status after evaluation by the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA).

Craig Sherman and Jennifer Gilmour are the recipients of this honor. Sherman teaches social studies and history. Gilmour is a science and mathematics teacher, as well as a cottage teacher, whose responsibilities include ensuring all students staying in the cottage complete homework assignments, finish chores and are in bed on time.

“This is a major accomplishment for Mr. Sherman and Mrs. Gilmour, as well as for Bethesda Academy on several counts,” said Michael Hughes, president of Bethesda. “Firstly, an amazing amount of work goes into the application, so it is a lengthy and arduous process. Additionally, it is very rare for one school to have two master teachers named at once.”

The application process includes meeting rigorous teaching qualifications and submitting an entire portfolio for evaluation by a peer committee. It also entails presentations and exhausting interviews, endorsement letters from school officials and sample lesson plans.

“In their evaluation, SCISA staff also noted a ‘surge in professional development and teaching quality at Bethesda,’ because two of our teachers, Kim Godbee-Glisson and Elizabeth Peek, had been recent finalists for Teacher of the Year,” said Hughes. “This recognition is a tribute to our entire faculty and staff. Each consistently personifies Bethesda’s commitment to ensuring students receive a superior education that will enable them to mature into young men with the potential to lead exemplary lives.”

Having formerly been affiliated with the Georgia Independent School Association, Bethesda Academy has been a member of the South Carolina Independent School Association since 2014. SCISA is a non-profit voluntary association of independent schools responsible for establishing accreditation standards, coordinating athletic and academic competitions and providing professional development opportunities for member schools.

Bethesda Academy Scholarship Gala Sets Stage for Graduation

Bethesda Academy’s 2019 Scholarship Gala was held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m on Friday, May 10, at the Plantation Club at The Landings. The Bethesdaclass of 2019 will graduate the following day.

The speaker for the scholarship gala was Robert L. Brown, principal/owner of R.L. Brown and Associates, an Atlanta architectural firm. Brown is a native of Dublin, Georgia, who worked on Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airportin the late 1970s.

He later founded his own firm. Its portfolio includes such projects as the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and Music Academics Building at Morehouse Collegeand the Birmingham Civil Rights Institutein Birmingham, Alabama, along with numerous other scholastic and public structures.

“We are excited to be able to bring a speaker of such accomplishment as Robert Brown,” said Bethesdapresident Michael Hughes. “He can demonstrate to our students that privilege is not a requirement when you have hard work, focus and leadership skills on your side. That’s not just how you build a career, but, as Brown has demonstrated, how you build a legacy.”

Bethesda’s class of 2019 has 15 members. Eleven plan to attend college and were accepted by 14 different colleges and universities. One future graduate plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Forceand another will attend an EMT course to enter the medical field. Two others hope to enroll in Georgia Ports Authority’s Y.E.S. program, a mentor-based program that transitions graduates into careers at the port.

Bethesda Academy Class of 2019

Bethesda Academy Class of 2019

Thanks to the school’s dual enrollment program with Point University, many of the college-bound graduates will start their college careers as near sophomores.

“In our junior and senior classes, one in three students is dual enrolled, meaning they are completing high school and at the same time taking college courses for college credit,” said Hughes. “This is not only a testament to the quality of our academic program, but in this day of staggering student-loan debt, it represents fiscal responsibility, leading to solid savings for students and their families.”

Twelve juniors and seniors are involved in joint enrollment classes.
