Bethesda Academy Scholarship Gala Sets Stage for Graduation

Bethesda Academy’s 2019 Scholarship Gala was held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m on Friday, May 10, at the Plantation Club at The Landings. The Bethesdaclass of 2019 will graduate the following day.

The speaker for the scholarship gala was Robert L. Brown, principal/owner of R.L. Brown and Associates, an Atlanta architectural firm. Brown is a native of Dublin, Georgia, who worked on Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airportin the late 1970s.

He later founded his own firm. Its portfolio includes such projects as the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and Music Academics Building at Morehouse Collegeand the Birmingham Civil Rights Institutein Birmingham, Alabama, along with numerous other scholastic and public structures.

“We are excited to be able to bring a speaker of such accomplishment as Robert Brown,” said Bethesdapresident Michael Hughes. “He can demonstrate to our students that privilege is not a requirement when you have hard work, focus and leadership skills on your side. That’s not just how you build a career, but, as Brown has demonstrated, how you build a legacy.”

Bethesda’s class of 2019 has 15 members. Eleven plan to attend college and were accepted by 14 different colleges and universities. One future graduate plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Forceand another will attend an EMT course to enter the medical field. Two others hope to enroll in Georgia Ports Authority’s Y.E.S. program, a mentor-based program that transitions graduates into careers at the port.

Thanks to the school’s dual enrollment program with Point University, many of the college-bound graduates will start their college careers as near sophomores.

“In our junior and senior classes, one in three students is dual enrolled, meaning they are completing high school and at the same time taking college courses for college credit,” said Hughes. “This is not only a testament to the quality of our academic program, but in this day of staggering student-loan debt, it represents fiscal responsibility, leading to solid savings for students and their families.”

Twelve juniors and seniors are involved in joint enrollment classes.

(SAVANNAH, GA) The 7th Annual State of Small Business in Chatham County, presented by Best Business Brokersand Wells Fargo & Company, will be held Wednesday, May 8, at the Eckburg Auditorium at Savannah Technical College, 5717 White Bluff Road, Savannah, GA.

During the morning event, five area experts will present reports on measurable benchmarks relating to the health of Savannah’s small business community.

The goal of State of Small Business is to have current and relevant information available about the local economy, to help the small business owner make informed decisions in strategic business planning.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Cynthia Cradduck, a Savannah-based marketing and public relations professional, has been elected to the Georgia Jaycees’ state executive committee, where she will serve as Vice President of Communications. She is joined on the executive committee by Danielle Fields, President; Katie Harris, Vice President of Community Development; Allen Farley, Vice President of Membership and Chad Brown, Chairman of the Board.

She is a junior partner at both Carriage Trade Public Relationsand Cecilia Russo Marketing, a collaborative arrangement in which she oversees operations for the two organizations. Her initiative took her from intern to junior partner in a three-year span, which was among the achievements that earned her a place on Georgia Trend’s 2018 “40 Under 40.”

Cradduck is a past president of the Savannah Jaycees, which she led during its 75th anniversary year. She also has been recognized with the Savannah Magazine/Savannah Morning Newsdesignation as a “Rising Star in Business.”

A graduate of Georgia Southern University, Cradduck was one of six students to earn L.E.A.P. certification, which recognizes public relations professionals who have gone through Leadership, Experience in Communication, Academics and Professionalism training.

She also has completed professional training courses offered by the Dale Carnegieprogram and Toastmasters International. In addition, Cradduck serves as the administrator for Leadership Southeast Georgiaand supports several nonprofit organizations in Savannah, including the Ronald McDonald House of the Coastal Empireand Girls on the Run.

In her new role, Cradduck will be responsible for the Georgia Jaycees’ internal and external communications, including its newsletter, website, press announcements and communications among its chapters. She will also be creating a chapter communications instruction guide which she will be presenting to the membership at their midyear convention.

The Jayceesis a leadership development organization that focuses on community involvement. This year, the state board held a major fundraiser to help provide financial resources for Out of the Darkness, a non-profit focused on battling human trafficking.

Jayceeschapters in Georgia include Athens, Atlanta, Columbus, Dahlonega, Gainesville, Gray, Milledgeville, Savannah, Statesboro, Swainsboro and Jesup.

Bethesda Academy and Georgia Southern University Partner for Agricultural Research

(SAVANNAH, GA) Students at Bethesda Academy, a residential and day school for boys in grades six through 12, are joining forces with chemistry students from Georgia Southern University – Armstrong Campusto try to answer questions on how gardening methods impact the nutritional value of produce.

The research will focus on determining the antioxidant levels in food grown by three different methods: conventional soil-based cultivation using conventional fertilizers and pesticides, organic cultivation using sustainable, non-toxic processes and aquaponics, growing plants in fish tanks with a water-based system.

Bethesdawill offer the local organic testing ground and, in exchange, students will get the opportunity to engage with chemists in hands-on learning activities.

“The question of how growing method affects nutrient quality is currently one of the most hotly discussed and least studied topics in agricultural science,” said Marrin Slocombe, director of farm and garden at Bethesda. “The findings could have an enormous impact on informing consumer preferences and determining government policy.”

The Bethesdacampus is home to five-acres of organic gardens, including a large greenhouse. The school uses the facilities, as well as a cattle herd and pasture land, to teach vocational agriculture. The school sells its produce at a farm stand open from 3-5 p.m. Thursdays.

(SAVANNAH, GA) The first of four 2019 Enmarkethealth education events, scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, will feature a free lunchtime lecture on the benefits of meditation for stress relief. The lecture will be presented at the Charles H. Morris Center, 10 East Broad St.

The session will be presented by longtime meditation instructor Cleveland Beach who has been leading such classes for more than 25 years.

Beach will share the four basic elements of meditation practice developed by HarvardProfessor Herbert Benson along with ideas from Jon Kabat-Zinn, with the Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

“During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress,” said Beach. “This process can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional well-being and your overall health.”

Beach, who has been lay ordained in Japanese Soto Zen Buddhism, attended seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He has been educated and trained in addiction counseling and has worked as a group facilitator, program manager and clinical supervisor.

He developed a private practice in Durham, North Carolina, teaching stress management and meditation to individuals and groups before relocating with his family to Savannah where he has facilitated numerous workshops, presentations and training on stress management, relaxation and meditation.

Doors will open for the April 30 event at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 11:45 a.m. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required as a healthy lunch will be provided and seating is limited. To RSVP, visit www.healthysavannah.org.

During the event, the EnmarketEncourage Health Series will also recognize the nonprofit Park Place Outreach- Youth Emergency Shelterthat supports runaway, homeless, and at-risk young people, ages 11-21, through residential and after-school programs.
