American Red Cross Youth Heroes Awards Breakfast

(SAVANNAH, GA) TheAmerican Red Cross of Southeast and Coastal Georgiawill host its fifth Youth Heroes Awards Breakfast at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 20, at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm St. in downtown Savannah.

This fundraising event will recognize local students who are giving back to their communities by volunteering at school and for religious organizations, various non-profits, camps and more. It will also honor Cecilia Russo Turnerfor her volunteer work in the community, as well as her philanthropy and advocacy.

“We hold this fundraiser each year to recognize outstanding youth for their commitment to improving our communities through volunteer service and to help increase awareness of the difference a commitment to service and compassion makes in the lives of our neighbors in need,” said Esther Sheppard, the agency’s executive director. “We know their potential is boundless. Therefore, we also honor a community mentor of the year to inspire and encourage them in their work.”

Turner, this year’s community honoree, is CEO of Cecilia Russo Marketing. During her 23-year career, she has managed and participated in philanthropic activities that have raised millions of dollars for nonprofit charities and civic improvements in Savannah and the Lowcountry. Turner also was one of the creators of the Youth Heroes event.

“Five years ago, I could not have imagined this idea would take hold, take shape and grow to be embraced the way it has by both this organization and the community it serves,” said Turner. “Professionally, my mentor is Cliff McCurry, who was, incidentally, the first recipient of this award. He and the other recipients have mentored untold numbers of young people, and each knows the power of hard work and rising above doubt, adversity and rejection.”

In addition to McCurry, who is a managing trustee at the University of Georgia Foundation; previous honorees are Cathy Hill, who recently retired as a senior executive with Georgia Power; Celia Dunn, owner of Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty; and former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson.

Students in the sixth through twelfth grades who will be recognized are enrolled public or private schools or are home-school students in the 2017-2018 school year. They each have at least 30 recorded and verified volunteer activities addressing community needs within southeast and coastal Georgia.

The public is invited to support the Youth Heroes Breakfast and contribute to the American Red Crossthrough tax-deductible gifts that range from purchasing individual tickets or corporate-level packages to making donations to recognize the honorees.

“Contributions make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors in need when disaster affects their lives,” said Sheppard. “We hope that, like these volunteers, members of the community will answer the call to help by supporting this organization and this event.”

Oglethorpe Driving Club Hosts Coffee and Cars at Bethesda Academy

(SAVANNAH, GA) – The Oglethorpe Driving Club (ODC) announces plans to hold the July 1 “Coffee and Cars” meeting at Bethesda Academy, 9520 Ferguson Avenue, Savannah, GA 31406, from 7 – 11 a.m.

On display will be the finest examples of classic, vintage and exotic cars from Savannah and surrounding areas. Donations will be accepted at the event, with all proceeds benefiting Bethesda Academy. Last year’s event raised almost $4,000 to provide scholarship funds for Bethesda students.

Typically held on the first Saturday of each month at Habersham Shopping Center, “Coffee and Cars” is relocating this month to be closer to the organization it is supporting.

“We are gearheads dedicated to our cars, but we are also dedicated to giving back to the community,” said Michael Shortt of the ODC. “One of our members was adopted from Bethesda, so it is a special place to all of us.”

The ODC was formed in Savannah in 2006 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first United States Grand Prix, which was held in Savannah on November 26, 1908. It’s a 50 member fraternity of sports car owners and enthusiasts dedicated to the use and enjoyment of sports cars and auto racing, ODC meetings typically host over 150 cars.

In addition to monthly “Coffee and Cars” meetings, the organization honors its predecessor, the Savannah Automobile Club of 1904, by sponsoring racing competitions, rallies, advanced driving courses, Concours d’Elegance and other social events. The ODC also works actively to advance the sport of motor racing in Savannah and to preserve Savannah’s illustrious auto racing heritage.

Cone Art Exhibit Reception to Benefit Anderson Cancer Institute Announced for May 18

Savannah Artist Unveils Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures at 24e Design Co.

(Savannah, GA) The Savannah artist Jim Cone announces a fine art exhibition with the opening reception to be held on Thursday, May 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 24e Design Co., located at 24 E Broughton St, Savannah, GA 31401. The exhibition will be showcased at 24e and run from Thursday, May 18 until Sunday, June 25.

Showcasing different fine art works such as drawings, paintings, sculptures and mixed media pieces, this art exhibition will be a rare opportunity to view Cone’s work as he does not often publicly show his art. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute (ACI) at Memorial University Medical Center. ACI provides cancer screening, diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, support services, and long-term follow-up for cancer patients.

Cone has been creating art for over 40 years, but after a recent bout with cancer, he has been energized with creativity and decided he wanted to use his talent to help others.

Ruel Joyner, owner of 24e Design Co., has known Cone for a number of years and feels honored to showcase his work at 24e Design Co., calling Cone’s work a pure form of passion. “Jim has painted for pleasure for over four decades. He started his artistic works in his spare time while working a full-time job at Georgia Power, and after his cancer he really focused on his talents. In a way, Dr. Guy Petruzzelli and the professional staff at Memorial gave him a new lease on life, and presented him with a new creative chapter in his life after cancer.”

At the exhibit, somewhere between 100 and 150 pieces will be unveiled including, “Tybee Nudes” and “Street People”. Street People, a series of paintings, was inspired by a found object (a round piece of metal) from the streets of Savannah, which had been bent into a shape that portrayed the image of a face. There are 20-plus “Street People” in the series to date.

“I offer the ‘Street People’ series as an artful way to introduce the viewer to a personality of a person living on the streets,” said Cone. “I want you to really see that person as an individual and feel that person’s struggle. We should all be inspired in our hearts to reach out and help the homeless street people in our community.”

In his distinctive style, and with vibrant colors, Cone pushes cubism forward. Considered to be the first abstract style of modern art, Cubist artists try to piece together fragments from different vantage points into one painting. With the spirit of inclusion, one can see the incorporation of cubism in almost all of Cone’s artwork. The bold expression of color often separates and defines Cone’s cubist works from those cubist works by others like Picasso and Braque.

Cone said, “For me, there needs to be a perfect mixture of creative energy, thought and muse, along with colorful paint, and countless brush strokes onto a wanting canvas, all to bring about a wonderful work of art. It’s making creative love.”

(SAVANNAH, GA) During its 2016 Encourage Health Educational Series, enmarket has donated $5,000 to four area nonprofit organizations: The Coastal Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America, Savannah AMBUCS, Savannah Tree Foundation and Urban Hope, Inc.

In conjunction with Healthy Savannah and other sponsors, the fuel and convenience store chain presented $1,000 grants during each lecture.

“We are committed to helping Savannah become a healthier community, and the Encourage Health Series is specifically geared to help show all of us how live healthier lives,” said Matt Clements, enmarket’s director of marketing. ”This is a win-win for all of us – those nonprofit organizations receiving the grant money and the audience members who enjoy learning about new ways to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

The company was founded in 1963 as Interstate Stations, then rebranded as “Enmark” in 1983 and most recently as “enmarket” in 2015 to reflect fresh and healthy food options.

To further its commitment to helping people live healthier lives, enmarket established the Encourage Health Series and in conjunction with other local sponsors, has presented a series of four lectures throughout the year for the past three years, calling on respected experts to share insights on nutrition, fitness and general tips for healthy living.

The 2016 program was co-sponsored by GulfstreamSandfly Family DentalHealthy SavannahSavannah Morning NewsSavannah Magazine and GPB Savannah – WSVH 91.1/WWIO 89.9.

In April, The Coastal Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America was selected to be awarded the first of the 2016 series’ $1,000 grants. This nonprofit organization combines educational activities with value-driven projects in order to mold young men and encourage them to make ethical and moral decisions throughout their future. The event featured a presentation by Kevin Klinkenberg, “Going Old School: Walk Your Way to Better Health,” encouraging attendees to make walking a part of their everyday lives.

In June, a $1,000 grant was presented to Urban Hope, which helps inner city children create better lives for themselves. Ellen Blossman’s presentation, “Eat Well and Boost Your Energy With Phytochemicals,” addressed the role of chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants and help prevent cancer and their relation to overall health.

At the third event in August, the $1,000 Encourage Health grant went to the Savannah Tree Foundation, a 33-year-old nonprofit organization that works to protect trees in Savannah and Chatham County. The lecture featured Denise Grabowski presenting “10 Ways Buildings Affect Your Mission to Healthy Life.” Grabowski said most people spend time indoors and explained how buildings can affect overall physical, mental and social wellbeing.

In October, the final lecture in the series benefitted the Savannah AMBUCS with a $1,000 grant and featured a presentation by Bauer Coslick: “10 Ways to Reduce Inflammation in the Body to Improve Longevity Through Acupuncture Practices.” Coslick is the owner of Vitality: Acupuncture +Integrative medicine. AMBUCS is an organization dedicated to bringing mobility and independence to people with disabilities, primarily through donating their Amtryke therapeutic tricycles to those in need.

AMBUCS also received a $1,000 grand prize for collecting the greatest number of votes from fans of the four nonprofits. At the beginning of the series, each organization received a QR code to be scanned at any of the 61 area enmarket stores. No purchases were necessary, but supporters had to go into a store to vote.

All of the 2016 enmarket Encourage Health Education Series lunchtime programs were held at the Savannah Morning News Auditorium, 1375 Chatham Parkway. Information about the 2017 program, including speakers, recipients and lecture dates, will be announced in early 2017.

The Savannah Mall Welcomes Students’ Exhibit in Celebration of Youth Art Month

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Mall will showcase students’ works of art during the month of March, in recognition of National Youth Art Month (YAM). Projects created by students from 53 area schools will be displayed in the Dillard’s Court from Saturday, March 5 to Sunday, March 27.

YAM is an annual observance each March in an effort to emphasize the value of art and art education for all children and to encourage public support for quality school art programs. The theme of this year’s event is “Save the Earth!”

The exhibit at Savannah Mall will be unveiled with an opening ceremony on Saturday, March 5 at 12 p.m. During the ceremony, the Savannah High School Chorus will be led by Choral Director Brittny Kempfer.

“A well rounded education is dependent upon a background laced with artistic experiences,” said Catriona Schaefer, teacher specialist for visual arts with Savannah Chatham County Public Schools. “The arts are a way for people of any culture to communicate and connect with one another. Practicing a form of art helps to develop critical thinking, problem solving skills, and promotes active and complex learning.”

Established in 1961, YAM provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are not possible in other subjects. The Council for Art Education (CFAE), a sponsor of Youth Art Month, strives to promote that art education develops self-esteem, appreciation of the work of others, self-expression, cooperation with others, and critical thinking skills. March is also “Music in Our Schools” month.

The Youth Art Month exhibit at the Savannah Mall will remain on display until Sunday, March 27.

Savannah Mall to Unveil 50-Foot Traveling Exhibit Commemorating Fallen Soldiers

“Remembering Our Fallen,” which honors Georgians and South Carolinians who have died in war zones since 9/11, on display in Center Court

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah Mall unveils “Remembering Our Fallen,” a 50-foot exhibit commemorating fallen soldiers, on Saturday, November 14. A motorcycle brigade will bring in exhibit to be displayed on the upper level of the mall, next to Payless Shoes.

The traveling exhibit, which pays tribute to U.S. troops from Georgia and South Carolina who have died as a result of wounds suffered in war zones since 9/11, will be on display now through January 3, 2016 and open to the public. The family members of the fallen soldiers are invited to a private viewing at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 14.

“We are deeply honored to present ‘Remembering Our Fallen’ to our community again this year,” said Savannah Mall General Manager Phil McConnell. “During this time of year when families and friends come together to celebrate the holidays, the Savannah Mall would like to take a moment to pause and honor the brave men and women who have given their lives protecting our country. We hope the community will visit the exhibit and take part in this very special and moving tribute.”

“Remembering Our Fallen” was the brainchild of Bill and Evonne Williams, residents of Omaha, Neb., whose four sons have served in the U.S. military. Through their organization Patriotic Productions and with educational sponsorship from Bellevue University, the Williams have created these one-of-a-kind exhibits for states including Georgia, South Carolina, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Arizona, North Dakota, Kansas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Texas.

Each exhibit includes formal military photos, along with favorite personal photos of the fallen soldiers, which have been provided by family members. The exhibits are individually crafted for a particular state and travel from venue to venue.
