Leopold’s delivered the ice cream during a shift change to ensure that both daytime and nighttime volunteers received a delicious ice cream treat. This marks the third consecutive year that Leopold’s Ice Cream has made this donation.

“These men and women make incredible personal sacrifices day in and day out to support our communities,” said Stratton Leopold, owner of Leopold’s Ice Cream. “Delivering ice cream is our way of saying ‘thank you for all that you do,’ this year and every year.”

(SAVANNAH, GA) Leopold’s Ice Cream, locally and family owned since 1919, held Scoops of Happiness, a daily ice cream giveaway on social media that invited locals in Savannah to nominate their friends and family for a chance to receive a free pint of their super-premium, homemade ice cream. The campaign lasted 14 days.

At the end of each day, one entry was randomly chosen to win two pints of ice cream: one for the nominee, and one for the person who made the nomination, for a total of 28 pints.

“Ice cream makes people happy, it’s a well-known fact,” said Stratton Leopold, owner of Leopold’s Ice Cream. “Right now, many in our community are isolated and feeling the effects of social distancing and the most important thing we can all do is share happiness. We started Scoops of Happiness because we wanted to give people in Savannah something to get excited about.”

In addition to launching this giveaway, Leopold’s Ice Cream has shifted their operations to reflect local and statewide safety guidelines issued in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both its Broughton St. and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport stores are now closed, but to-go orders of pre-packed 4-ounce cups, pints and ice cream sandwiches are available for pickup from the Leopold’s Creamery, located at 502 East 37th St. Customers can call 912-234-4442 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or go by the Creamery to place an order.

(SAVANNAH, GA) The growing Savannah-based Enmarket convenience store chain continues to embrace cutting-edge technology as it rolls out a new customer rewards program called Enjoy Rewards.

Enmarket’s Enjoy Rewards will enable customers to earn fuel discounts by buying gas or diesel fuel as well as food and other merchandise inside the store. Those discounts can amount to as much as $2 off per gallon on fuel purchases.

“This rewards program provides significant savings for our customers and also maximizes convenience,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket, the 49th largest convenience store chain in the country. “Participants will be able to earn and redeem rewards at any of our 125 stores.”

Other features of the program include a coffee club, frozen beverage club and roller grill club, each of which awards a customer a free item after six purchases, plus a free annual birthday reward.

Enjoy Rewards also offers registration rewards such as a one-time 10-cents-a-gallon discount and five free fountain drinks or coffees. Customers may pick up a card at any Enmarket location and can register the card online or on the Enmarket Enjoy Rewards mobile app to start redeeming their fuel discounts. From there, Enmarket customers have the option to either use the physical card or enter their phone number at checkout to access their accounts and rewards.

In addition to providing access to the rewards program, the card can be activated as a method of payment, called enPay. When customers pay for their fuel with enPay, they earn 10 cents off each gallon purchased in that transaction. The enPay card allows customers to make transactions using a secure PIN after linking the card directly to their checking account.

The software that powers the rewards program was developed by Paytronix, while the payment platform is delivered by Zipline.

Inspire Your Community Podcast Donated $2,000 to Richmond Hill’s Backpacks of Love Program

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Inspire Your Community podcast, which was launched this year by Chris Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Group construction firm, to share inspiring local stories of inspiration, kindness and positivity, wrapped up 2019 with a $2,000 donation to Backpacks of Love and a volunteer session of packing family food boxes.

The podcast launched in the spring of 2019, seeking to inspire the community with true stories and to support the organizations that generated those stories with Dewitt Tilton Group’s philanthropy. Projects to date have included support for the family of a police officer who lost his life in the line of duty, funding for art supplies at a local elementary school and a creative project that supports local breast cancer survivors.

For the final episode of the year, the podcast turned its attention to the Backpacks of Love program in Richmond Hill, Ga. This organization, launched in January 2013, sends needy and potentially hungry children home with bags of food every Friday, as well as boxes of food on holiday breaks, filling the gaps ordinarily filled by their school-based breakfasts and lunches. The United Way of the Coastal Empire partners with the New Beginnings Community Church to provide funding that allows the group to obtain food from Second Harvest Food Bank, and other donations supplement the amount and type of food included.

Each Friday, the participating children each receive a bag containing two entrees such as soup or ravioli, a two-pack of instant oatmeal, an individual cereal package, a granola bar, fruit snack, crackers, cookies, fruit cup or fresh fruit, juice box and shelf-stable milk.

Melodie Lane, director of Backpacks of Love, worked with the Dewitt Tilton Group before the holiday break as they and their families packed over 25 food boxes with a ham or turkey, instant potatoes, canned yams, six to eight cans of vegetables and a can of gravy, several boxes of macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and sauce, peanut butter and jelly, beans, bread, rice, cornmeal mix, pancake mix and syrup, cake mix and frosting, plus a bag of candy canes or other holiday candy.

“The thought of children going hungry is just not acceptable,” said Chris Tilton, host of the podcast. “We wanted to support Backpacks of Love because these folks are not only feeding children during the holidays but throughout the school year. This effort is truly inspiring.”

(HARDEEVILLE, S.C.) In just over one year since Enmarket acquired Joker Joe’s Truck Stop just off Interstate 95’s Exit 8, the property has undergone a complete renovation and expansion.

Enmarket is the largest and fastest-growing convenience store operator based in the coastal Georgia and South Carolina low country region, and the new Enmarket Travel Plaza — complete with the region’s first franchise of the Texas-originated Fuzzy’s Taco Shop — just opened earlier this month.

The nine-acre Hardeeville property, at the interchange of US Highway 278 with I-95, becomes the largest travel plaza in Enmarket’s extensive three-state inventory. With its location at the gateway to Hilton Head Island and the South Carolina Lowcountry, the newest Enmarket Travel Plaza is ideally situated to serve everyone from long-haul truckers traveling the I-95 corridor to vacationers headed to and from South Carolina’s beaches.

“With this travel plaza we are significantly expanding our diesel business,” said Brett Giesick, Enmarket’s president. “We’re also solidifying our position as a major fuel and restaurant provider between our home market of Savannah and Charleston. We’re also bringing an up-and-coming, exciting and affordable new fast-casual restaurant to the area as the first South Carolina location of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.”

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop specializes in Baja-style tacos, chips and queso and cold beverages. The menu is described as “Mexican favorites with a splash of Baja.”

The restaurant got its start in 2003, capitalizing on a location near the Texas Christian University campus in Fort Worth and making a name for itself as friendly to student budgets. It was named to Nation’s Restaurant News’ 10 Fastest-Growing Chains of 2018 and now has 150 corporate and franchise-owned locations in 16 states. Fuzzy’s currently is operating in Georgia in Athens and Alpharetta. This is the franchise’s first South Carolina location.

The re-designed 13,000-square-foot travel plaza includes nine diesel lanes. Improvements added since the Enmarket acquisition include an enlarged trucker’s lounge, updated showers, modernized truck scales and laundry facilities, along with a resurfaced parking lot and overnight parking for over-the-road and RV drivers.

In the remodeled convenience store, customers will find fresh hot and cold grab-and-go food options, the newest bean-to-cup coffee brewers and an expanded cooler and beer cave. The location will also mark Enmarket’s debut of Mooz, a new frozen yogurt offering. Mooz will include nine varieties of soft-serve frozen yogurt and features a topping bar with 24 different offerings.

The new state-of-the-art convenience store was renovated to integrate its appearance into the surrounding historic district. The design of the new 3,522-square-foot convenience store at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. drew from the site’s transportation-related history with its proximity adjacent to the Central of Georgia Railway and Georgia State Railroad Museum.

The non-traditional design includes, among other things, an outdoor dining patio, a green space, and a bike service area. Enmarket contracted with a local artist to design and paint a community-themed mural on one of the exterior walls.

The rebuilt outlet is accessible to trolleys and other vehicles critical to Savannah’s downtown tourism industry and features four multi-product dispensers with gasoline and diesel offering.

“We are thrilled to unveil this beautiful new store in the historic district,” said Brett Giesick, President of Enmarket. “The design and concept reflect the direction we are taking in the community which is to provide a more modern, customer-friendly store with a dual focus on pedestrian and automobile traffic.”

The new store features Enmarket products already available at other full-service stores, including fountain drinks, “chillen” frozen beverages, bean-to-cup coffee, and local craft beer. The location also includes Enmarket’s proprietary kitchen concept, The Eatery, featuring its signature breakfast biscuits and antibiotic-free, never-frozen chicken. Fresh grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, parfaits, and more are prepared on-site. This is the only convenience store to offer all of these options on the western end of downtown Savannah.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Students at Bethesda Academy, a residential and day school for boys in grades six through 12, are joining forces with chemistry students from Georgia Southern University – Armstrong Campusto try to answer questions on how gardening methods impact the nutritional value of produce.

The research will focus on determining the antioxidant levels in food grown by three different methods: conventional soil-based cultivation using conventional fertilizers and pesticides, organic cultivation using sustainable, non-toxic processes and aquaponics, growing plants in fish tanks with a water-based system.

Bethesdawill offer the local organic testing ground and, in exchange, students will get the opportunity to engage with chemists in hands-on learning activities.

“The question of how growing method affects nutrient quality is currently one of the most hotly discussed and least studied topics in agricultural science,” said Marrin Slocombe, director of farm and garden at Bethesda. “The findings could have an enormous impact on informing consumer preferences and determining government policy.”

The Bethesdacampus is home to five-acres of organic gardens, including a large greenhouse. The school uses the facilities, as well as a cattle herd and pasture land, to teach vocational agriculture. The school sells its produce at a farm stand open from 3-5 p.m. Thursdays.
