The Fifth Annual Bra Project Announced for October to Benefit DragonBoat Beaufort

(Bluffton/Beaufort, SC) In recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Pinnacle Medical Group announces “The Bra Project” will once again benefit DragonBoat Beaufort and local breast cancer survivors. This is the fifth consecutive year that the group has presented the event.

Local students from Hilton Head High School, May River High School and Bluffton High School have been invited to custom-design a bra and enter the competition. In total, 10 bras will be selected.

A kickoff unveiling event for these bras will be held at Pinnacle Plastic Surgery on Thursday, October 3, at 4 p.m. “The Bra Project” will then go on tour throughout the Lowcountry for the entire month.

“The Bra Project” student competition tour dates will be announced soon. Locations include:

Votes and donations will be collected for the public’s favorite submission at each of the exhibit locations.

This year, the Pinnacle Medical Group is inviting local artists to participate in a non-competitive portion of “The Bra Project”. Artists’ submissions should be inspired by someone with a history of breast cancer and can be created in the medium of their choice. The deadline to enter as an artist is Friday, September 13.

All pieces will be auctioned off at the grand finale celebration, “The Bra Project: Bras and Bubbly”, which will be held at the Thibault Gallery on Thursday, October 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

During the “Bras and Bubbly” event, the students’ bras will be on display and the winner will be announced. Proceeds for the event will benefit DragonBoat Beaufort. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bras-bubbly-event-tickets-69224118201.

“So many of our patients are affected by breast cancer and we see first hand how someone’s family, work, confidence and overall quality of life can be impacted,” said Dr. Audrey Klenke, plastic surgeon and principal of Pinnacle Medical Group. “As a practice, Pinnacle Medical Group is dedicated to supporting the breast cancer community and our neighbors who are facing the fight with cancer. This annual fundraiser is our way of helping and we encourage everyone in the Lowcountry to join in our effort.”

According to breastcancer.org, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. in 2019 alone. Overall, about 1 in 8 U.S. women (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

DragonBoat Beaufort is a non-profit organization that started in 2012 when a group of cancer survivors was inspired by “Awaken the Dragon,” a documentary shown at the 2012 Beaufort International Film Festival. The goal of the organization is to assist cancer patients who live, work or receive treatment in the Lowcountry.

Enmarket Encourage Health Lecture Focuses on Facts and Fictions of CBD Oil

(SAVANNAH, GA) The facts and fictions of CBD oil will be the topic when Savannah chiropractor Michael Vaughn takes the podium at the third presentation in the Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series, set for Tuesday, August 27 at the Charles H. Morris Center.

Doctor Michael Vaughn

Attendance at the lecture is free and a healthy lunch is provided by Enmarket, but reservations are required at healthysavannah.org. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Morris Center, 10 East Broad St. A regular feature of the program is the awarding of grants to nonprofit organizations, and at this session, Union Mission is the recipient.

Cannabidiol oil, better known as CBD, is a heavily trending product derived from non-intoxicating elements of marijuana or hemp and sold over the counter for the treatment of a variety of health problems.

In his talk, Dr. Vaughn will cover cannabis history and a brief overview of the human endocannabinoid system before moving on to examples of what are believed to be CBD benefits: relief of sleep problems, anxiety, musculoskeletal pain, brain injury and epilepsy. He will also touch on case studies that cover such topics as tumor shrinkage.

Dr. Vaughn will then discuss CBD’s legal status and its safety and benefits. Studies on long-term effects have yet to be developed, but he will share some insights on this developing field.

“This is a fascinating subject that holds the potential to be of great benefit to many people, but the jury is still out on many aspects of CBD oil,” Vaughn said. “I believe many people can find relief through CBD products, but I realize it is poorly understood by the public and that many in the medical field are skeptical.”

Dr. Vaughn has practiced chiropractic medicine in Georgia and England for decades. A product of Savannah Christian Preparatory School and Armstrong State College, he graduated from Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, Texas. He completed post-grad work leading to diplomate status with the American College of Chiropractic Neurology. He has worked with world-class competitive athletes, including serving with the USA Weightlifting Federation and serving as treating chiropractor for the Greece Olympic track team during the Atlanta-hosted 1996 Summer Olympic Games. He is currently in private practice at Savannah Chiropractic Center, where he specializes in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal disorders and rehabilitation. In addition, he continues to serve in a variety of educational and regulatory roles in his profession.

The Enmarket Encourage Health Educational Series is a wide-ranging presentation of diverse health topics. Previous subjects this year included meditation for stress relief and food insecurity issues in Savannah. Yet to come is an October presentation on the value of strength training at any age. The popular free series is presented in a lunch-and-learn format, with each session offering the community the opportunity to hear local experts discuss health-related topics in a non-commercial atmosphere.

This marks the sixth year for the series in partnership with Healthy Savannah, the Charles H. Morris Center at Trustees’ Garden, Cha Bella, David’s Dry Cleaners, the City of Savannah, Clover Health, Sandfly Family Dental, Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine, St. Joseph’s/Candler and WRHQ.

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Standard

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
By Dr. Ian McLeod

Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults. It’s believed that 1 in 4 Americans aged 65 and older falls each year. Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.

Just one fall can result in a serious health decline or even death. Therefore, it’s important for older adults and their families to become aware of ways to prevent these detrimental accidents before they happen.

While there are a number of factors that could lead to a fall – such as poor eyesight, physical surroundings and underlying health conditions – one of the most common is lack of balance. As they age, most people become less active and begin losing coordination, flexibility and the ability to balance, making it easier to fall.

There are a number of exercise-based programs that can help improve balance, but it’s important to first understand the underlying cause. And that’s where CDP comes in.

This new technology, short for computerized digital posturography, has shown great promise in helping determine why patients may fall from balance-related issues. During the CDP test, patients wear a safety harness that ensures they won’t fall or be injured during the test. The specialist then administers a series of trials that examine how well patients can maintain their balance under changing conditions.

The patients look at panoramic scenes presented on a wrap-around screen while a test operator tilts or slides the platform on which they are standing to evaluate how their balance adjusts to different situations.

The CDP results help physicians determine the scope of their patients’ balance-related issues, as well as the best course of action. In many cases, the treatment could be something as non-invasive as vestibular therapy, an exercise-based regimen that helps prevent falls in those experiencing balance problems, dizziness or vertigo.

Seniors and their family members should be aware that there is so much they can do to deter and potentially prevent falls. By acting to ensure they and their loved ones are aware of the options available to them, they can possibly avoid the lengthy, costly and painful consequences of a fall.

Beaufort Dermatology Innovates With Non-Invasive Skin Exam Technology

(BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA) Beaufort Dermatologyof Pinnacle Medical Groupis thrilled to present Vivascope 1500, the newest in skin cancer technology allowing the provider to make a diagnosis without removing any tissue. Pinnacleis the only practice in the area offering this advanced technology.

In-vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive skin imaging modality for detecting diseases of the skin such as melanoma and other cancers. It can be used in place of biopsies in certain cases and is effective in viewing large skin lesions where a biopsy of the entire spot might be difficult.

Additionally, it is useful in defining the margins of an area for surgical excision and can be useful in evaluating the results of treatment. Among its advantages is the ability to avoid potential scarring from biopsies and also provides a safe, painless option for children or those who may be nervous about procedures.

“Medical research and development shape a modern medical practice,” said owner Dr. Audrey A. Klenke, MD, FACS. “We are so excited to be the first to offer Vivascope 1500, which can decipher a lesion that needs to be removed versus one that can be safely monitored. In the Lowcountry, our fun-in-the-sun lifestyle makes it critical to prioritize skin health.”

Dr. Klenke adds, “The fact that procedures are becoming increasingly less invasive without losing the ability to accurately diagnose and treat is great news for patient care.”

Angela Canfield of Sandfly Family Dental and Premier Dental Designs Offers Free Oral Cancer Screenings in April

Angela Canfield of Sandfly Family Dental and Premier Dental Designs Offers Free Oral Cancer Screenings in April

(SAVANNAH, GA) In recognition of April being Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Sandfly Family Dentalin Savannah and Premier Dental Designsin Rincon will offer free oral cancer screenings on Thursday, April 11 and Thursday, April 25. The exams normally cost as much as $80.

“I recommend anyone 18 and older to be tested annually for oral cancer,” said Dr. Angela Canfield, who owns both offices. “The oral cancer screening light shows a change in oral tissue that warrants a biopsy. For patients who show a change in tissue, I usually suggest a follow-up visit with an oral surgeon or an ear nose and throat specialist, depending on the levels found.”

The oral cancer screening is noninvasive and takes less than 10 minutes. While the screenings will be free, an appointment is necessary.

The death rate associated with oral cancer is high not just because it is hard to discover or diagnose but because it frequently is discovered late in its development. In the United States, one person dies every 60 minutes because of oral cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, 43 percent of those diagnosed with oral cancers will die within five years. While the disease has few, if any, early symptoms, early detection can increase survival rates to as much as 90 percent.

Oral cancer typically is associated with long-term tobacco use, but it’s becoming more frequent in young adults who have never smoked.

Creating Good Dental Habits at an Early Age by Angela C. Canfield, DDS

Creating Good Dental Habits at an Early Age
by Angela C. Canfield, DDS

It’s always a good time to think about the health of your children’s teeth. The routines you set in stone now will carry your children into adulthood and set the stage for healthy teeth.

When it comes to those teeth, a tried-and-true parental friend comes in handy: routine. Brushing and flossing should be a part of your child’s daily routine in the morning and before bed.

But additional routines are needed too. I’m talking about a twice-a-year dental checkup. You don’t want a dental visit to become a time of trauma and dread because of a dental emergency. A positive, cheerful visit with a dentist who understands children’s needs and is experienced in dealing with them should be as much a part of a child’s life as checkups with a pediatrician, back-to-school supply shopping or a photo with Santa.

For parents who want to build dental care into their children’s lifelong habits, the American Dental Association’s consumer website, mouthhealthy.org, can be a useful tool. It isn’t a preachy site full of boring demands to brush, brush, brush. It has helpful, real-world advice that parents can put to good use. The section with suggestions on tooth fairy visits almost reminds me of a sort of Pinterestfor teeth.

Someday, your child will be a senior, not just a high school senior, but much, much later, a senior as in “senior citizen.” Whether that future senior citizen is eating with his or her own teeth 75 years from now has a lot to do with what you are teaching your child right now.

You wouldn’t take any aspect of your child’s health for granted, but some parents overlook the fact that dental health is health. Sometimes, a special promotion like National Children’s Dental Health Month is a good reminder to make sure your children have a healthy dental routine.
