Enmarket and Healthy Savannah Provides Day of Service and Donation to Union Mission

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket and Healthy Savannah presented a $1,000 donation to Union Mission as part of the 2019 Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series.

Following the presentation, 15 volunteer representatives from Enmarket and Healthy Savannah remained onsite to repaint walls at Union Mission’s Ben and Bettye Barnes Center, 1407 Atlantic Avenue. The center provides permanent supportive housing for up to 16 single women living with disabilities. Program tenants are supported by such services as case management and community resource referrals.

“Our employees are always eager to give back to the community, and these volunteer days, which are new to the Encourage Health Series, have proven to be successful on all sides,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket. “We appreciate the opportunity to learn about this organization and its mission. From this experience, our hope is that our team members will want to get even more involved.”

Union Mission tackles the major issue of homelessness in our area in a number of different ways, including operating an emergency shelter, providing permanent supportive housing, and addressing root causes of homelessness with specialized services in mental health counseling and employment training programs.

This marks the sixth year for the Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series, sponsored by Healthy Savannah, St. Joseph’s/Candler, Clover Health, Sandfly Family Dental, the Charles H. Morris Center at Trustees’ Garden, Cha Bella, David’s Dry Cleaners, the City of Savannah, Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine and WRHQ.

14th Annual Buddy Walk Returns to Forsyth Park on Oct. 5

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society will hold its 14th annual Buddy Walk on Saturday, Oct. 5, in Savannah’s Forsyth Park.

 

LOWCOUNTRY DOWN SYNDROME SOCIETY

 

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society hosts the event each year to draw attention to the strength and needs of individuals with Down Syndrome and to offer families a fun and inclusive outdoor activity. This year’s event has a fundraising goal of $50,000.

 

Expect lots of feet on the ground, along with wheelchairs, carriages and strollers. The event has drawn thousands of attendees each year. This year Sheriff Wilcher will be the Grand Marshall for the event.

 

This marks the second year that healthy lifestyles will be a particular focus of the Buddy Walk, and the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society has once again partnered with Healthy Savannah. Children with Down syndrome face an increased risk for obesity due in part to the syndrome but also to common environmental factors. With that in mind, nutritious lunch options and additional health education will be provided during the event.

 

A festival will follow the walk, complete with face painting, pumpkin painting, bouncy houses, games, music, refreshments and other entertainment.

 

Individual registration is $15, and alternative pricing is offered for families of different sizes. One new feature this year is encouraging families to form teams using the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society’s website, ldssga.org.

 

“Families from throughout the region look forward to the Buddy Walk each October,” said Whitney Lowery, executive director of LDSS. “Coming together in October, which is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, allows us to not only enjoy fellowship but helps us in our primary goal of promoting changes in local and national policies regarding Down syndrome.”

Savannah Film Alliance Announces Eight Honorees for Upcoming Inaugural Gala

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Film Alliance (SFA) has chosen eight outstanding local professionals from Savannah’s thriving film and television community to be honored at the inaugural SFA Honors Gala, slated for Saturday, Sept. 28, at Victory North, 2603 Whitaker St. The star-studded event has a theme of “Old Hollywood” and is open to the public. Attendees can expect a night of “Lights! Camera! Action!” at the gala, intended as a glamorous and high-profile new event on Savannah’s social calendar. The entertainment community will pull out all the stops that evening, evoking classic Hollywood with lights, a red carpet, live music – even paparazzi.

The honorees being recognized that night include:

  • Nora Clark, a production coordinator with credits on at least six film and television projects, now at work on a documentary about the life of Chicago tap dance legend Bril Barrett;
  • John Grace, who has worked as director of photography and camera operator on theatrical features and commercials, including work for ABC, NBC, CBS, HBO, ESPN, PBS and Walt Disney Studios, among many others. He is also a faculty member of the Georgia Film Academy and teaches technical production classes at Savannah Technical College;
  • Genevieve Hawkins, with credits as a production and location coordinator, has worked on such Savannah-filmed projects as “Lizzie,” “Peanut Butter Falcon,” “The Act,” and “Council of Dads”;
  • Amanda Kulkoski, documentarian, cinematographer, and film professor at Savannah College of Art and Design;
  • Witt Lacy is an assistant director who has worked with a variety of productions before setting up base in Savannah to work on “Underground,” “Poison Rose,” “Lady and the Tramp,” and “The Glorias,” among others;
  • William Martin, documentarian, cinematographer, and educator, has 15 years of production experience in television news;
  • Buck Meeks, location services and period actor, first worked in period costume locally 30 years ago in the filming of “Glory”;
  • Anthony Paderewski, whose background includes a wide array of roles in the film industry, including photographer, acting coach, producer, location scout, location manager and actor.

“The local entertainment industry adds so much to Savannah, enriching our culture and tremendously boosting our economy,” said Charles Bowen, founder of the SFA. “Yet many of the people who work so hard in the field are laboring under the radar, unrecognized and unheralded. The Savannah Film Alliance chose to remedy that by starting a tradition of recognizing our local talent.”

The event also offers an opportunity to offset the negative attention that has been spurred by Georgia’s adoption of anti-abortion legislation and the resulting threat that the entertainment industry will boycott the state should that legislation be enforced, Bowen said. “This is a chance to put the focus back onto all of the positive and fun aspects of the movie and television industry,” he said.

A cross-section of the local entertainment industry selected the inaugural class of honorees, each of whom will receive beautiful trophies at the event. Their accomplishments and the recognition of the breadth and health of Savannah’s professional film community will be at the core of the upcoming celebration. Victory North, where the gala will be held, is a distinctive new event space in Savannah’s charming Starland District.

In addition to saluting these honorees, the event will showcase the best of the local entertainment scene and will celebrate its role in our local economy. Last year, the entertainment industry was responsible for $120 million in direct spending in the Savannah Area, according to the Savannah Regional Film Commission.

The Fifth Annual Bra Project Announced for October to Benefit DragonBoat Beaufort

(Bluffton/Beaufort, SC) In recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Pinnacle Medical Group announces “The Bra Project” will once again benefit DragonBoat Beaufort and local breast cancer survivors. This is the fifth consecutive year that the group has presented the event.

Local students from Hilton Head High School, May River High School and Bluffton High School have been invited to custom-design a bra and enter the competition. In total, 10 bras will be selected.

A kickoff unveiling event for these bras will be held at Pinnacle Plastic Surgery on Thursday, October 3, at 4 p.m. “The Bra Project” will then go on tour throughout the Lowcountry for the entire month.

Votes and donations will be collected for the public’s favorite submission at each of the exhibit locations.

This year, the Pinnacle Medical Group is inviting local artists to participate in a non-competitive portion of “The Bra Project”. Artists’ submissions should be inspired by someone with a history of breast cancer and can be created in the medium of their choice. The deadline to enter as an artist is Friday, September 13.

All pieces will be auctioned off at the grand finale celebration, “The Bra Project: Bras and Bubbly”, which will be held at the Thibault Gallery on Thursday, October 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

During the “Bras and Bubbly” event, the students’ bras will be on display and the winner will be announced. Proceeds for the event will benefit DragonBoat Beaufort. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bras-bubbly-event-tickets-69224118201.

“So many of our patients are affected by breast cancer and we see first hand how someone’s family, work, confidence and overall quality of life can be impacted,” said Dr. Audrey Klenke, plastic surgeon and principal of Pinnacle Medical Group. “As a practice, Pinnacle Medical Group is dedicated to supporting the breast cancer community and our neighbors who are facing the fight with cancer. This annual fundraiser is our way of helping and we encourage everyone in the Lowcountry to join in our effort.”

According to breastcancer.org, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. in 2019 alone. Overall, about 1 in 8 U.S. women (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

DragonBoat Beaufort is a non-profit organization that started in 2012 when a group of cancer survivors was inspired by “Awaken the Dragon,” a documentary shown at the 2012 Beaufort International Film Festival. The goal of the organization is to assist cancer patients who live, work or receive treatment in the Lowcountry.

Enmarket Encourage Health Lecture Disclosed the Facts and Fictions of CBD Oil

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah chiropractor Michael Vaughn focused on the facts and fictions of CBD oil during the third presentation of the Enmarket Encourage Health Education Series, held at the Charles H. Morris Center.

Union Mission received the nonprofit grant, which is awarded at each Encourage Health lecture. A healthy lunch was provided to all attendees by Enmarket before the lecture.

Cannabidiol oil, better known as CBD, is a heavily trending product derived from non-intoxicating elements of marijuana or hemp and sold over the counter for the treatment of a variety of health problems. In his talk, Dr. Vaughn covered the history of the cannabis plant and gave a brief overview of the human endocannabinoid system before providing examples of the believed benefits of CBD: improved sleep, anxiety reduction, and relief from musculoskeletal pain, brain injury and epilepsy.

Dr. Vaughn also discussed CBD’s legal status, safety and marketing. Studies on long-term effects have yet to be completed, but he shared some insights on this developing field.

“This is a fascinating subject that holds the potential to be of great benefit to many people, but the jury is still out on many aspects of CBD oil,” Vaughn said. “I believe many people can find relief through CBD products, but I realize it is poorly understood by the public and that many in the medical field are skeptical.”

Dr. Vaughn has practiced chiropractic medicine in Georgia for decades. A product of Savannah Christian Preparatory School and Armstrong State College, he graduated from a chiropractic program at Parker College in Dallas, Texas. He completed post-grad work leading to diplomat status with the American College of Chiropractic Neurology. He has worked with world-class competitive athletes, including serving with the USA Weightlifting Federation and serving as treating chiropractor for the Greece Olympic track team during the Atlanta-hosted 1996 Summer Olympic Games. He is currently in private practice at Savannah Chiropractic Center, where he specializes in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal disorders and rehabilitation. In addition, he continues to serve in a variety of educational and regulatory roles in his profession.

The Enmarket Encourage Health Educational Series is a wide-ranging presentation of diverse health topics. Previous subjects this year included meditation for stress relief and food insecurity issues in Savannah. The upcoming October presentation will focus on the value of strength training at any age. The popular free series is presented in a lunch-and-learn format, with each session offering the community the opportunity to hear local experts discuss health-related topics in a non-commercial atmosphere.

Park Place Outreach Transitional Living Program Hosts Open House for New Location

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Park Place Outreach transitional living program will host an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 4-6 p.m. at 818 E. Henry St.

The open house will include refreshments, appetizers, and chance to learn more about the transitional living program.

The event will be held to network with local community members and to celebrate the official launch of the program.

“Every opportunity you have to demonstrate understanding and empathy to homeless youth will support their development, sense of self-worth and future potential,” said program director Cheri Dean.

The transitional living program began accepting residents in February at a former location on Henry Street, and can now serve as many as six males at the new facility. Its mission is to prepare homeless, runaway and at-risk males ages 16 to 21 for independence and self-sufficiency.

The program provides housing, case management services, life skills, personal and community connections and other individualized services.

“Many of the young men we encounter have been abandoned, betrayed, misunderstood or abused by those they trust most,” Dean said. “Gaining their confidence requires a deep understanding of those we serve and their adverse life experiences.”

Enmarket to Raise Funds Throughout August for LLS’s Light the Night

(SAVANNAH, GA) All 124 of Enmarket’s convenience stores across Georgia and the Carolinas will join the fight against blood cancers in August, marking the seventh consecutive year the stores have helped raise money during the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night campaign.

The stores’ month-long campaign will involve selling Light the Night paper icons for $1 each to support the non-profit’s mission to cure blood cancer and to help patients and their families.

To date, Enmarket’s participation in the organization’s major fundraiser has raised over a total of $500,000. This year, the convenience store chain hopes to partner with its customers to add $150,000 to that number.

Each year, the event spurs friendly competition among the stores and last year, the Port Royal, South Carolina, location won bragging rights for the most money raised at a single store.

“Our customers and our employees enjoy this fun and easy way to support an important cause,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket. “Our mission is to enrich life in the communities we serve, and we do that in a variety of ways, from our Encourage Health speaker series to the LLS campaign. This particular icon sale gives customers a chance to join thousands of other customers to make a major impact with a small donation.”

The money that’s raised will be donated to LLS at the annual Light the Night program, set for Nov. 9 on Memorial Health’s campus in Savannah.
