Enmarket Presents $137,758 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the Light the Night Walk

(SAVANNAH, GA) Enmarket is pleased to announce that an outpouring of community support has enabled the company to raise $137,758 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Savannah. This was the sixth year Enmarket has collected community donations through this annual fundraiser, and in total, the company has raised nearly $640,000.

Enmarket team members presented the check to representatives of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the Light the Night Walk held on Saturday, November 9.

For one month each year, the company’s 124 convenience stores in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina sell Light the Night paper balloon icons for $1 each. The proceeds are donated in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission to cure blood cancer and help patients and their families.

“Enmarket’s customers really came through this year, as we knew they would, showing compassion and extraordinary support for the work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket. “We are thankful for each donation, and for the tireless efforts of our staff members to help us reach this year’s goal.”

Giesick also recognized the staff at Enmarket 845, led by manager Tom Nord, as the top fundraising store during this year’s campaign. Located in Beaufort, SC, the store contributed $5,187. This is the second year in a row that Nord and his staff have raised more money than any other Enmarket location.

“Private funding is so critical for us to continue our mission, and we are very grateful to Enmarket and its customers for their overwhelming support through the Light the Night program,” said Lauren Mathews, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Georgia Chapter’s Campaign Manager for Light The Night.

Volunteers from Healthy Savannah and Enmarket, Savannah’s largest and fastest-growing convenience store chain, also attended the 14th Annual LDSS Buddy Walk® in Forsyth Park to help set up, to work the festival and food stations following the walk and to clean up after the event.

Proceeds from the annual Buddy Walk benefit the local leadership, support, outreach, education and advocacy programs LDSS runs throughout the year to support people with Down syndrome, their families, and caregivers. This year, Buddy Walk offered healthy lunch options such as grilled chicken, fruit and vegetables to honor its commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles among children and adults with Down syndrome.

“The addition of a service day has brought a whole new dimension to the way we show our gratitude toward organizations like LDSS,” said Brett Giesick, president of Enmarket. “We so enjoyed connecting and celebrating with the families and the strong community LDSS has helped create in the Lowcountry.”

Enmarket and Healthy Savannah presented the check to LDSS during the fourth and final lecture of the 2019 Encourage Health Education Series. Girls’ Roller Derby Team Named Recipients of Canfield Mouthshield Program

Standard

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Canfield Mouthshield Program, funded and administered by local dentist Angela Canfield of Sandfly Family Dental in Savannah and Premier Dental Designs in Rincon, selected the Savannah Junior DerbyTaunts to receive this year’s custom athletic mouth guards.

“The DerbyTaunts focus on teaching girls the value of team sports and encouraging physical activity for its health benefits,” said Canfield. “By making sure they can protect their teeth while engaging in a vigorous sport, we want to ensure they protect their smiles and dental health without sacrificing athleticism.”

The young roller derby players joined a growing list of local sports teams that have benefited from the Canfield Mouthshield Program that began in 2014 and provides custom mouth guards, even in team colors, for all members of a team. Previous recipients include Benedictine Military School, Groves High School, Hancock Day School, Bethesda Academy, Jenkins High School and Savannah Christian Preparatory School.

The DerbyTaunts, a 28-member roller derby team for girls ages 8 to 18, began to come together in 2011 and played their first competitions in 2013.

Custom-made mouth guards provide stability to the players’ jaws and cushion blows that can cause injuries such as broken teeth, fractured jaws, gum lacerations and injuries to a person’s lips or tongue. According to the American Dental Association, an effective mouth guard should be comfortable, resistant to tearing and resilient.

A mouth guard must fit properly, be durable, easily cleaned and not restrict speech or breathing. The devices furnished by the Canfield Mouthshield Program are valued at $85 each and come with a one-year warranty that covers any dental expenses incurred by players while wearing the mouth guards. The warranty pays $1,093.75 per injured or replaced tooth up to a maximum of $35,000 per incident. Since the program started, Canfield has donated almost $100,000 worth of protective gear to local student-athletes.

Some experts – including Canfield – recommend mouth guards be worn by athletes in competitive and recreational sports where contact and collisions are likely. The American Dental Association recommends wearing custom mouth guards during both competition and practice for the following sports: acrobats, basketball, boxing, field hockey, football, gymnastics, handball, ice hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, roller hockey, rugby, shot putting, skateboarding, skiing, skydiving, soccer, squash, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling. Some include baseball and softball infielders on that list.

The new state-of-the-art convenience store was renovated to integrate its appearance into the surrounding historic district. The design of the new 3,522-square-foot convenience store at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. drew from the site’s transportation-related history with its proximity adjacent to the Central of Georgia Railway and Georgia State Railroad Museum.

The non-traditional design includes, among other things, an outdoor dining patio, a green space, and a bike service area. Enmarket contracted with a local artist to design and paint a community-themed mural on one of the exterior walls.

The rebuilt outlet is accessible to trolleys and other vehicles critical to Savannah’s downtown tourism industry and features four multi-product dispensers with gasoline and diesel offering.

“We are thrilled to unveil this beautiful new store in the historic district,” said Brett Giesick, President of Enmarket. “The design and concept reflect the direction we are taking in the community which is to provide a more modern, customer-friendly store with a dual focus on pedestrian and automobile traffic.”

The new store features Enmarket products already available at other full-service stores, including fountain drinks, “chillen” frozen beverages, bean-to-cup coffee, and local craft beer. The location also includes Enmarket’s proprietary kitchen concept, The Eatery, featuring its signature breakfast biscuits and antibiotic-free, never-frozen chicken. Fresh grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, parfaits, and more are prepared on-site. This is the only convenience store to offer all of these options on the western end of downtown Savannah.

“This is a one-of-a-kind location for Enmarket,” continued Giesick. “A diverse customer base of downtown residents, commuters, local businesses, SCAD students and faculty, and tourists were all carefully considered when we selected this store design and the products and services that this location offers.”
