Jenkins High School and Savannah Christian Preparatory School to Receive Custom Mouth Guards from Sandfly Family Dental

(SAVANNAH, GA) Football teams from Jenkins High Schooland Savannah Christian Preparatory Schoolwill receive free custom mouth guards courtesy of the 2018 Canfield Mouth Shield Program sponsored by Dr. Angela Canfield of Sandfly Family Dentalin Savannah and Premier Dental Designsin Rincon.

This will be the fifth year Canfield has donated mouth guards to local schools. These custom-made mouth guards provide stability to the players’ jaws and cushion blows that can cause severe dental injuries such as broken teeth, fractured jaws, gum lacerations and injuries to their lips or tongue.

Sandfly Family Dental, Savannah Dentist, Savannah Public Relations, Carriage Trade Public Relations, Cecilia Russo Marketing

Savannah Christianhas three football teams that will benefit from the donation: a fifth- and sixth-grade team, a seventh- and eighth-grade team and a high school team.

“We are excited to use this gift as a chance to educate our players on safety fundamentals,” said Eddie Wilson, a school board member and volunteer head coach for the SCPSfifth- and sixth-grade team.

Jenkins High Schoolis the first Savannah public school to win consecutive regional football titles during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons. Canfield’s donation will allow the team to put more of its booster club’s fundraising capacities toward providing pre- and post-game meals for its players.

“Properly fitted mouth guards are proven to reduce the damage of impacts that often lead to concussions and other severe injuries,” Canfield said. “It is a privilege to put my time and expertise toward protecting local athletes from these types of injuries.”

The full fitting, molding and examination of each player’s mouth guards usually costs $440. Between Jenkinsand SCPS, 177 players will benefit from this donation, which amounts to $51,480 of donated protection pieces.

These mouth guards will have a one-year warranty that covers dental expenses incurred by players who are injured while wearing the mouth guards. The warranty also pays $1,093.75 per injured or replaced tooth and up to a maximum total liability of $35,000 per incident.

Students Give The Dawn’s Daughter Leadership Academy Two Thumbs Up

Another exciting and powerful journey begins for members of the Dawn’s DaughterLeadership Academy. 60 students from Chatham, Liberty, Bryan, and Effingham Counties recently began the 2018- 2019 session.

Dawn's Daughter 2018

Dawn’s Daughter 2018-2019

The young ladies met at Savannah Christian Preparatory Schoolfrom June 11th through June 15th. During that week, twenty- three experts from Chatham and Bulloch Counties put on interactive workshops that focused on leadership, financial management, self-esteem and character building, public speaking, goal setting, time management, SAT prep, tips to overcome bullying, and more.

Students have been on cloud nine as they talk about their experiences at the academy. On an anonymous survey, students responded: “Dawn’s DaughterLeadership Academy will give you endless strength in the days when you feel alone, powerless, or helpless. I fondly remember all of the wonderful people who crossed my path. In this wild, random journey of life, I have found the strength to forge my destiny.” “Nothing can be better than this. It was an amazing experience!”

They are excited about continuing the yearlong academy. So is the founder and executive director Dawn Baker. “I cannot even begin to express how overjoyed I am that the young ladies are not only attending the academy, but they are looking forward to it and getting so much out of the experience. In a time when it appears as if young people are only interested in pop culture, electronics and social media, it is refreshing to see that these tenth, eleventh and twelfth graders want to learn about character building and lessons that will help them become successful in their schools and communities now and well into the future.”

The mission of Dawn’s Daughter, Ltd. is to empower girls and women, of all backgrounds and abilities, to set high goals and make positive life choices that will enable them to maximize their full potential.

Dawn’s Daughter, Ltd. envisions a world where young women will have clear paths and opportunities for finding their voices and learning the skills necessary to achieve their goals. Young women will increasingly take their places in leadership roles across the world, unafraid and unintimidated to make decisions, no matter where they are, that will improve the quality of life for everyone. We are developing the next generation of leaders.

Passport to Excellence Lecture Series Spotlights Stratton Leopold, Dawn Baker and Howard Morrison

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) District announces the inaugural Passport to Excellence Lecture Series presented by the gold sponsor, JCB North America. The series is made up of three lectures featuring presentations from accomplished individuals who previously attended or graduated from SCCPSS, sharing their unique career journeys and the insights they have learned about success and how to achieve it.

On Thursday, August 27, Stratton Leopold will present from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Savannah Arts Academy, located at 500 Washington Ave. Leopold attended elementary school at Massie Heritage Center, and then went on to attend Chatham Jr. High. Several years later, he studied Pre-Med at Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt Universities, but ultimately chose to work his way into the film industry. He has now been in the film business for more than 40 years, producing major, large-budget motion pictures. He has nearly 60 film and television credits to his name ranging from executive producer and producer to casting director and actor. Leopold has also served as an Executive Vice President at Paramount Pictures. He is locally famous for Leopold’s Ice Cream on Broughton Street, which was founded in 1919 by his father, Peter Leopold and his uncles Georgia and Basil.

The second lecture, taking place from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 29 at Savannah High School, located at 400 Pennsylvania Avenue, will feature a presentation from Dawn Baker. Baker graduated with honors from Savannah High School, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Baker now co-anchors WTOC’s The News at 5:30 and THE News at 11:00. Baker is also a published author from her book, “Dawn’s Daughter: Everything A Woman Needs To Know.” 20% of all of the proceeds from her book go to “The Dawning of a Miracle Scholarship,” a fund Baker created to help young ladies with chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses go to college.

Howard Morrison will be the final speaker on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Woodville Thompkins Technical and Career High School located at 151 Coach Joe Turner Street. His lecture will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Morrison attended Massie School from the second grade to the sixth grade in Savannah. Later becoming a graduate of Yale University and a veteran of the US Navy, Morrison had a banking career that spanned nearly 30 years and helped to develop the C&S Bank’s (now Bank of America’s) High Technology Banking Group and Atlanta’s high technology business community. As a result in 1995 Morrison was inducted into the Georgia High Technology Hall of Fame. After retiring from banking in July 1996, Howard returned to Savannah where he has devoted a lifetime of service advocating educational and entrepreneurial related initiatives.
