Catie’s Gathering in Bryan County

Standard

Catie’s Gathering Bryan County was back as an in-person event this year. The event was held at the beautiful Palms Plantation. Thanks to a hard-working planning committee and the tremendous way the community supports this event, it was an amazing night.

Prior to dinner and the program, guests checked out the tables, beautifully decorated by our hostesses, and perused auction items. Table themes included The Golden Girls, Yellowstone, the Masters, and more. The planning committee handled the catering, and long-time CURE partners Kaufman-Heinz handled all audio-visual needs for the event. There were fun door prizes and an incredibly exciting live auction that highlighted the generosity of the Bryan County community. This year’s program included Tim Traywick sharing a bit about his daughter Mallory’s battle with cancer. Bev Rousch was also on hand to share how CURE’s support of research is helping kids like her son Seth beat cancer. The program wrapped up with an amazing performance by Cirque Savannah.

The event raised more than any other Catie’s Gathering Bryan County event to date by bringing in $90,500! Thank you, Bryan County, for your generous spirit and for coming out to enjoy a great night!

CURE Childhood Cancer To Hold First Annual ‘Catie’s Gathering’ Fundraiser in Moultrie, Ga.

Standard

(MOULTRIE, Ga.) CURE Childhood Cancer, the only organization providing financial and emotional support to local children and families while raising funds to further critical research specifically for pediatric oncology, is holding a Catie’s Gathering dinner and auction at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Lily Pond Farm, 271 Dorminey Rd., Moultrie, Ga.

Catie’s Gathering is an inspiring event benefiting Catie’s Fund of CURE Childhood Cancer. The dinner features unique, individually-themed table decorations, a silent auction, a live auction, and a moving program of speakers. Since its inception, Catie’s Gathering has grown from one to five separate events in South Georgia. To date, Catie’s Fund has raised more than $2.8 million. This is the first Catie’s Gathering in Moultrie.

“The annual Catie’s Gathering events reveal just how loving and generous the community is of South Georgia. This started as a single event, and now CURE holds up to five in the region,” said Mandy Garola, vice president of CURE in South Georgia. “Our community wants more opportunities like these to support our mission to end childhood cancer. We’re so grateful to our donors, sponsors and volunteers who work to make these gatherings successful.”

The funds raised are invested in CURE’s research initiatives – specifically the Precision Medicine Program, which focuses on individualized treatments based on each child’s genetic makeup. The funds also offer general support to patients and their families fighting childhood cancer.

Sponsors of Catie’s Gathering Moultrie include Ameris Bank, Procom Sales, Lasseter Motors, Judy and Mark Mobley, South GA Crop Insurance Inc, Stone’s Home Center, Amber and Chip Sumner, and Carolyn and Stan Sumner. In-kind sponsors include Albany Beverage Company, Gay’s Food, Inc. and Lily Pond Farm.

People interested in supporting the event can participate in the online auction and make donations at CGMoultrie2022.givesmart.com.

CURE Childhood Cancer is working for a cure by funding research exclusively for childhood cancer and supporting families affected by the disease. Childhood cancers differ from adult cancers in the way they grow and spread, how they are treated, and how they respond to treatment. Every year, more than 17,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer, and incidence rates are increasing every year. Despite cancer being the leading cause of death by disease in children, only six cancer drugs have been developed and approved specifically for children in the last 25 years.

ABOUT CURE CHILDHOOD CANCER
Founded in 1975, CURE Childhood Cancer is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through funding targeted research while supporting patients and their families. With cancer as the second leading cause of death in children, CURE has dedicated more than $38MM to specific research projects aimed at curing cancers that affect children. CURE Childhood Cancer Partners with Sommers Oil Company and Shell Gasoline for ‘The Giving Pump’ Charity Event

Standard

Local gas stations offer consumers the opportunity to fill their tanks while supporting the critical mission of ending childhood cancer

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) CURE Childhood Cancer, the only organization providing financial and emotional support to local children and families while raising funds to further critical research specifically for pediatric oncology, is the charity of choice for Shell gasoline stations across the region during this year’s Giving Pump initiative.

The Giving Pump, a three-month promotion through Oct. 31, is part of Shell Oil Company’s nationwide Force for Good campaign that raises awareness and funds for nonprofit organizations by allocating a portion of sales to their cause. Locally owned and operated Sommers Oil Company was the driving force to bring this promotion to the Lowcountry and South Georgia area and chose CURE Childhood Cancer as the beneficiary.

Cory Sommers, the Vice President of Sales & Marketing of Sommers Oil Company, said, “It is so important to support our friends and neighbors who are going through a crisis. A cancer diagnosis for a little one seems like one of the biggest crises a family could face, and CURE is the organization that is there to help them – with rent, food and even gas. I’m proud we chose CURE Childhood Cancer as the organization to benefit from the Giving Pump and I trust that our customers will want to support their mission too.”

Last year, with only seven pumps participating, the promotion raised nearly $4,000 in the Savannah area. This year, the program has expanded to more than 40 sites in Ga. and South Carolina.

Ga. Giving Pumps can be found at Shell stations in Brunswick, Eatonton, Midway, Metter, Pooler, Riceboro, Rincon, Richmond Hill and Savannah. Participating S.C. Giving Pump Shell stations can be found in Aiken, Beaufort, Bluffton, Columbia, Elgin, Hardeeville, Hilton Head, Johnston, Lexington, Moncks Corner, Ridgeland, Summerville, Swansea and Walterboro.

“We appreciate all the participating Shell stations and everyone who fills up for CURE,” said Mandy Garola, Vice President of CURE in South Ga. “The funds raised will support pediatric oncology patients and their families right here in our community, as well as research that is critical for fighting childhood cancer. We believe a cure can be found in our lifetime, and the awareness and funds raised by The Giving Pump are invaluable to this effort.”

CURE is on a mission to change this.

Shell launched The Giving Pump campaign at stations across the U.S. as part of its Force For Good initiative to drive positive change in local communities by giving back. Since launching Force For Good, Shell has highlighted the impact its wholesalers have in the communities in which they operate, going beyond fuel quality and loyalty, to help raise millions of dollars nationwide.

YMCA of Coastal Georgia Holds Ceremonial “Golden Sledgehammer Swing” as West Chatham YMCA Renovation Begins

Standard

Pooler Branch to Transform into a Modern Wellness Center

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) As part of a broader effort to update and modernize the YMCA of Coastal Georgia locations, the transformation of current YMCA locations into health and well-being centers are beginning with Pooler’s West Chatham YMCA branch.

YMCA held a ceremonial “Golden Sledgehammer Swing” to commemorate the groundbreaking of the renovation project. During the event, pre-K students from West Chatham’s Child Learning Center gave a short performance.

Felder & Associates, a distinguished and award-winning architecture firm in Savannah specializing in historic preservation, commercial and high-end residential building projects, participated in the ceremony alongside West Construction.

“It’s been 20 years since the West Chatham YMCA was updated. So we found a multitude of opportunities to better use floor space to serve the core constituency better. We’re adding glass walls for openness and transparency; the childcare areas will be expanded into space for both younger and older children, and we’re adding more space for machines, cardio and free weights in the fitness area,” explained Brian Felder, Founder and Principal Architect.

“The YMCA is a pillar of our community, and with all of the growth in the Pooler area, the renovated West Chatham YMCA will have something for all walks of life. It’s a very forward-thinking endeavor for the Y,” said Matt West, West Construction Company.

The $1.6 million investment intends to address challenges faced by the community in the post-pandemic reality. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the average body mass index (BMI) has nearly doubled in children. Additionally, 43% of Americans report having worse exercise habits than before the pandemic, and 31% report that financial hardship prevented them from seeking health care in 2021, according to a Gallup Poll.

As the modern YMCA pivots to an overall wellness focus, proven programs to prevent and control chronic diseases are given the same priority as physical fitness. In addition to expanded and updated exercise areas, the new YMCA will offer space for nutrition education and community peer support.

“We maintained an understanding of the bigger picture goal in making this a modern health and wellness center, so that played into our decisions on everything, from updating all surfaces, floors and ceilings — making them easier to clean and maintain — to ensuring the space we were repurposing was put to better use,” Felder added. “The fitness center is going to be better than many pay gyms in the area.”

While the YMCA’s flagship Habersham location is also slated for an upgrade, the volume at the West Chatham location compelled the YMCA board to start the renovations at the West Chatham YMCA. Opened in 2001, it was one of only a few businesses on its stretch of Pooler Parkway at the time. In 2021 it was one of the busiest of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia’s 10 branch locations, serving 6,757 members and 1,638 program participants who registered 121,839 visits over the course of the year.

“With this much-needed renovation, we’re looking ahead to the future and working to ensure that our facilities and services are ready to serve for the next 50 years,” says Joel Smoker, YMCA of Coastal Georgia CEO.

The project is expected to take approximately six months, with completion at the end of winter 2023.

“We’re a community-minded firm, so it’s an honor to work on a project like this. The YMCA is a foundational part of the Savannah area, and a lot of heart went into this. We look forward to seeing it through,” said Felder.

West added, “Our company enjoys projects that improve our community, and the YMCA makes us all better in so many ways. We’re excited to be on the team.”

ABOUT THE YMCA OF COASTAL GEORGIA
The YMCA of Coastal Georgia has been serving the Coastal Georgia community for over 167 years and continues to work every day to advance its cause to strengthen the community through its three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The YMCA serves men and women, girls and boys of all ages and from all walks of life. All of this and more is accomplished while putting forth the Y mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

State Representative Derek Mallow Presents The Outstanding Georgia Business Award To Oliver Maner During The Firm’s 125th Anniversary Year

Standard

Esteemed Savannah law firm earns recognition by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office for its commitment to community service.

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) Oliver Maner, a leading law firm in Savannah, Ga., was presented the Outstanding Georgia Business Award by State Representative Derek Mallow of Georgia House District 163, which includes downtown Savannah where the firm’s offices are located.

State representatives are permitted to request recognition for a business in their district from the Georgia Secretary of State, along with documentation and verification of facts.

Rep. Mallow proposed Oliver Maner for this recognition after reading an article on LinkedIn about the law firm’s work with a local nonprofit. Rep. Mallow investigated further and found that the attorneys and partners at Oliver Maner supported at least 25 more charities and immediately contacted the Secretary of State’s office to begin the proposal for this honor, which was accepted.

“For their contribution to the community, I’m proud to present the Outstanding Georgia Business Award to Oliver Maner,” Rep. Mallow said. “They donate their time, talents and treasures to help so many organizations. It’s only right we recognize their contributions.”

Oliver Maner Managing Partner Patrick O’Connor accepted the award on the firm’s behalf.

“It’s especially gratifying to receive this award during our 125th anniversary year,” said O’Connor. “Oliver Maner has always supported local charities and doing so is a core value of our firm. We’ve been part of Savannah and the state of Georgia for more than a century, and we look forward to another 125 years of giving back and serving our community.”

Savannah Author Debuts First Novel, “The Blessing of the Celtic Curse”

Standard

New book is the first in a series featuring the shenanigans of a cast of Savannah characters

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) The first installment in local author Leigh Ebberwein’s Savannah-based romance series, The Saints of Savannah, will be on the shelves soon as the author releases her debut novel, “The Blessing of the Celtic Curse.”

“This book is based on my experiences of growing up in Savannah and pulling from my Irish heritage,” said Ebberwein.  “‘The Blessing of the Celtic Curse‘ weaves an uplifting and powerful tale of the cross-generational impact of reckless choices, the redeeming power of love, the importance of having a sisterhood of friends and the unbreakable bond of family.”

Ebberwein, who is a native of Savannah, is an alumna of St. Vincent’s Academy and a Georgia Southern University graduate. Two years ago, she picked up a pen and began writing in a marble back composition book that belonged to one of her children. “It was like magic. I had always enjoyed storytelling, but it wasn’t until that moment that I realized that I was being called to write those stories down.”

“‘The Blessing of the Celtic Curse‘ reinforces the idea that you must know where you came from before you can understand where you’re going. But most importantly, it’s about two of the most beautiful places in the world: Savannah and Ireland,” continued Ebberwein.

The official release date of “The Blessing of the Celtic Curse” was fittingly All Saints Day. This is the first book in a series that will continue with another book that will launch in the Spring.Ebberwein’s publisher is Old Fort Press. Her books are available through independent bookstores and online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other outlets in paperback and e-book versions.
