The idea for the internship program was sparked when Friess received an unsolicited resume. She took the idea to company President and Co-owner Chris Tilton, who enthusiastically embraced it. Before long, they decided to formally launch an internship program, starting with the same person who sent the resume, Scott Hawley.

“I think the biggest benefit of the internship is experience. Learn as much as you can as fast as you can, and then take those skills and put them to use,” Hawley said. “The field experience was invaluable. Learning hands-on from seasoned professionals and seeing the challenges firsthand gave me a real grasp of construction that I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else. It is definitely where I learned the most and solidified my desire to pursue a career in this field.”

Tilton agreed that the internship program not only benefits Dewitt Tilton Group but also the construction industry as a whole. “I appreciate seeing Scott’s progress and how he is beginning to understand the broader concepts of construction,” said Tilton. “It is rewarding to see his eyes light up as he takes notes.”

(POOLER, GA) Stature Investments held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of The Shops at Lakeside Village, located at 1702 Pooler Parkway, as well as the first retail occupied unit, home to the new Dunkin’ restaurant.

The Shops at Lakeside Village is an exciting new retail center, covering 1.83 acres, in one of the most rapidly developing areas of Pooler. The 17,389 square-foot metal building stands in the northwest corner of Pooler Parkway and I-16 interchange at Memorial Boulevard and is part of the larger Lakeside Village development, a mixed-use and luxury residential community positioned across the street from the recently opened St. Joseph’s/Candler medical campus.

As part of Dunkin’s ongoing efforts to help ensure the safety of guests and crew in light of the COVID-19 health crisis, all restaurants are limiting service to carry out as well as delivery through delivery partners where available. Dine-in service has been suspended to prevent the congregation of guests. On-the-Go ordering is available through the Dunkin’ app for pickup in-store or at the drive-thru to limit contact.

The 2,300 square-foot restaurant employs approximately 30 crew members and is open every day from 4:30 AM to 10:00 PM.  The 13,000 square-foot shopping center will be the first retail space of Kansa Center and is currently in the initial leasing stage for its three retail units. The shopping center parcel covers 3.10 acres. 

Once completed, the pre-engineered metal building will feature a modern design with a stucco veneer, distinctive canopy and large storefronts that will offer tenants enhanced visibility. The project is estimated to be finished at the end of this year. 

“This groundbreaking ceremony marks a milestone for us in the development of Kansa Center,” said Patel. “We are excited to become part of the Pooler community and we’re confident the center will offer an abundance of resources to the local community.”

Future projects for the Kansa Center development include two restaurants, a hotel, a doctor’s office and additional retail space. In total, the development will cover a little over 18 acres.

“It’s an honor to have been chosen by Sweven Investment Group for this project,” said Tilton. “I was first introduced to Darshil during a project our dads worked on years ago in South Carolina. When Sweven planned to build in the Pooler area, Darshil knew we were the team to get the job done right, in budget and on time.”

Inspire Your Community Podcast Donated $2,000 to Richmond Hill’s Backpacks of Love Program

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Inspire Your Community podcast, which was launched this year by Chris Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Group construction firm, to share inspiring local stories of inspiration, kindness and positivity, wrapped up 2019 with a $2,000 donation to Backpacks of Love and a volunteer session of packing family food boxes.

The podcast launched in the spring of 2019, seeking to inspire the community with true stories and to support the organizations that generated those stories with Dewitt Tilton Group’s philanthropy. Projects to date have included support for the family of a police officer who lost his life in the line of duty, funding for art supplies at a local elementary school and a creative project that supports local breast cancer survivors.

For the final episode of the year, the podcast turned its attention to the Backpacks of Love program in Richmond Hill, Ga. This organization, launched in January 2013, sends needy and potentially hungry children home with bags of food every Friday, as well as boxes of food on holiday breaks, filling the gaps ordinarily filled by their school-based breakfasts and lunches. The United Way of the Coastal Empire partners with the New Beginnings Community Church to provide funding that allows the group to obtain food from Second Harvest Food Bank, and other donations supplement the amount and type of food included.

Each Friday, the participating children each receive a bag containing two entrees such as soup or ravioli, a two-pack of instant oatmeal, an individual cereal package, a granola bar, fruit snack, crackers, cookies, fruit cup or fresh fruit, juice box and shelf-stable milk.

Melodie Lane, director of Backpacks of Love, worked with the Dewitt Tilton Group before the holiday break as they and their families packed over 25 food boxes with a ham or turkey, instant potatoes, canned yams, six to eight cans of vegetables and a can of gravy, several boxes of macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and sauce, peanut butter and jelly, beans, bread, rice, cornmeal mix, pancake mix and syrup, cake mix and frosting, plus a bag of candy canes or other holiday candy.

“The thought of children going hungry is just not acceptable,” said Chris Tilton, host of the podcast. “We wanted to support Backpacks of Love because these folks are not only feeding children during the holidays but throughout the school year. This effort is truly inspiring.”

“Inspire Your Community” Podcast Supports The Bra Project

(SAVANNAH, GA, and BLUFFTON/BEAUFORT, SC) “Inspire Your Community,” a philanthropic podcast series launched by Chris Tilton of the Dewitt Tilton Group, will turn its spotlight and its $1,000 donation to The Bra Project this October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Bra Project is sponsored by the Pinnacle Medical Group to benefit DragonBoat Beaufort and its mission to support area cancer survivors. This marks the fifth year in which The Bra Project has invited high school students to custom-design bras for submission in a traveling art show as part of a competition for best-designed bra. Art classes from Hilton Head, May River and Bluffton high schools participated in this year’s Project.

The student-designed bras have been featured in a tour of Beaufort County stores and healthcare facilities, including Pinnacle Plastic Surgery in Bluffton, throughout the month of October collecting votes from the public. The winner was announced at “Bras & Bubbly,” a finale event that also featured a silent auction of pieces donated by local artists with a breast cancer story of their own to share.

Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Group commercial construction firm, launched his monthly “Inspire Your Community” podcast earlier this year to share true and inspiring stories of local efforts to improve the community. His hope is that such stories will inspire others to perform random acts of kindness or to be proactive about problem solving in the face of adversity. The Dewitt Tilton Group’s donations to help grow each featured cause have been a part of the podcast since its inception.

“The Bra Project operates on so many immensely beneficial levels,” said Tilton. “It raises money to support local cancer survivors and it gets young people involved in an important issue, all the while tackling a serious subject in a lighthearted and life-affirming way, which is just what we’re looking for with ‘Inspire Your Community.’”

(SAVANNAH, GA) Trinity Worship and Praise Ministries broke ground on a new sanctuary on the existing church campus at 12532 White Bluff Road.

“The entire congregation shares a great excitement about this next step in our ministry, and my wife, Shirley, and I were excited to prayerfully begin construction of a building we hope will be a blessing to this church and our community,” said Pastor Larry Pounds.

The Dewitt Tilton Group is the contractor for the project, which will build a new 200-person capacity sanctuary for the church. The 4,500-square-foot structure will feature a stage, a vaulted ceiling, restrooms, private office for the pastor, three additional offices and a future baptismal location. The new building will share the church campus with the existing church and other support buildings.

Construction is expected to be complete sometime in December 2019.

Principal of Dewitt Tilton Group Launches “Inspire Your Community” Podcast to Do Just That

(SAVANNAH, GA) Chris Tilton, one of two principals at the Dewitt Tilton Groupcommercial construction firm, has launched a monthly podcast featuring local stories of inspiration, kindness and positivity, and the company will reward people who help find those stories with a $300 donation to the cause of the nominator’s choice.

A small, heartwarming true story was the spark for “Inspire Your Community Podcast,” Tilton said.

“I heard about this guy who was dropping his daughter off at daycare one morning, just something lots of us do every day, and he noticed that the swing on the playground was broken. He didn’t complain about it to the daycare manager; he didn’t ignore the problem. Instead, the following Saturday, on his day off, he drove over and fixed the swing,” said Tilton. “Not a big thing, just seeing a problem and doing something about it.”

Such simple but true stories, Tilton thought, could inspire others to perform random acts of kindness or to act instead of complaining. His response is to launch a monthly podcast to tell true, inspiring stories suggested by members of the community. To encourage people to come forward with stories, the Dewitt Tilton Groupwill donate $300 to the cause of the successful nominator’s choice.

To submit story ideas, email dtg.inspire@gmail.com. One story will be selected each month to be the subject of the podcast, and the nominator of that story will be given the opportunity to designate a charity to receive a $300 donation.

“There are lots of inspirational stories out there, and we hope people will come forward to let us help share them,” Tilton said. “We’re starting now, so we need to hear from people. This is one small way we can all help counteract hate and negativity in the world.”

The Dewitt Tilton Group Starts New Construction on 30,000 Building in Garden City

(GARDEN CITY, GA) Savannah-based commercial construction firm, the Dewitt Tilton Groupwill hold groundbreaking ceremonies on Thursday, April 18, in Garden City for a 30,000-square-foot warehouse/office building for Roush’s Delivery Service.

The groundbreaking will be at 11 a.m. at the construction site, Lot 6 West Chatham Business Park in Garden City.

Roush’s Delivery Service, founded in 1973, provides expedited less-than-truckload (LTL) and logistics services. Mike Roush is president of the family-owned firm, and Mike Roush Jr. is its general manager. The company experienced a 400% growth over the past four years, thus demanding physical expansion.

“We have to adapt as our clients’ needs change,” said Mike Roush. “Most of our customers now need project-based work, and our new site will equip us to meet those needs in the most effective manner. Yes, we have grown tremendously, but the reason for this expansion is also to better serve our clients.”

The pre-engineered metal building will include 3,500 square feet of heated and cooled office space. The building is dock-high all the way around, and the office portion will be configured as two stories. Translucent light panels along the front and rear will allow natural light into the warehouse. 12 overhead garage doors that vary in size with edge or pit levelers will accommodate most any truck and its load. There is also a concrete ramp into the building from parking level as another means of access for receiving or delivering goods.

“Mike and I were buddies in grade school and high school,” Chris Tilton, one of the principals at Dewitt Tilton, said of the younger Roush. “Who would have thought, back when we were at Benedictine, that we would one day be working together on a $2 million construction project? We appreciate all of our clients, but it is really fun to work with old friends.”

The Dewitt Tilton Group Delivers Holiday Meals to Thunderbolt Fire and Police Stations

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Dewitt Tilton Group prepared and delivered holiday meals to the first responders and staff at the Thunderbolt fire and police departments.

Because first responders are always on the move, the meals were delivered in to-go boxes for easy transportation. Chris Tilton and Andrew Dewitt, principals of The Dewitt Tilton Group, personally packed the boxes and hand-deliver them.

The meals included turkey, stuffing and sides with all of the fixings of a home-cooked meal. Altogether, over 30 first responders and staff members received a meal.

“Police and fire departments serve around the clock, even in our little town of Thunderbolt,” said Tilton. “This is our way of saying thank you to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep our community safe.”

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Dewitt Tilton Group hosted luncheon workshop at the Savannah Golf Club, presenting “From Buying the Dirt to Obtaining the Permit: The Critical Steps to Starting a Commercial Construction Project.”

Kim Thomas, director of operations for the Dewitt Tilton Group discussed the permitting process and zoning regulations, and Chris Tilton, president and co-founder of the Dewitt Tilton Group, spoke on selecting the perfect location for a project and what unexpected road bumps you might encounter when you find it.

“Unforeseen site work to prepare the land for building is easily the most troublesome issue among our clients,” said Tilton, “It’s important to look at a lot holistically, rather than focusing on its price per acre. Purchasing land without considering the quality of the dirt already on it, for example, can be an enormous oversight.”

Tilton also talked about how crucial it is to be aware of details such as how flood zones will affect building codes, the presence of zoning laws and local regulations and whether the lot has existing access to utilities, all of which can significantly delay construction projects if they catch buyers off-guard.

“We wanted to share some of the lessons our years of experience have taught us about commercial construction,” said Tilton, “For example, it’s easy for people to fall into the trap of believing they have found a great deal purchasing land, only to incur huge setbacks when faced with site work and permitting. Buying land for commercial construction is a big investment, so we want to provide prospective buyers with the resources they need to make informed decisions that will benefit them in the long run.”
